Baker takes CRC Frosty Desert Enduro win By Jim Bowman LUCERNE VAL~EY, CA, JAN. 16 Baja winner Al Baker (Mugen USA) dropped just one point today to tie with four other riders for the overall victory at the California Racing Club's Frosty Desert family enduro. Baker earned the top honors by virtue of seconds lost to beat Dirt Bike magazine's Tom Webb, who rode a new Honda XR350, Scott Sam pso n (T rack ' n Travel KTM ), Grant Pal ensk e (Wheel sm ith Maicol O'Neal l J ones/ND/KR WI S pectrol Swallow T ir e) a nd AMA Region Six 250cc Enduro Cham p io n Ever ett Angle (H us). CRC enduro designer La rrv La ng - ley continues to experiment with course layouts and came up with a treat today on the first loop. Usually, the first loop is designed to allow riders of any skill level to finish, incl uding the three wheelers. Speed averages are typically 18 or 24 mph and quite a few of the one-loop-only riders zero the loop. T oday, the difference was the cho ice of an easy way or a hard way about 22 miles out. The hard way was a 12 mph section of rocks in a tight sandwash that was a lot of fun . It was a refreshing challenge for all the riders. We never did find out what the easy way was ' like because we couldn't find anyone who had taken that route. The one loop riders didn't seem to find it that difficult either. Michele Keast won the one-loop overall with a score of 0.2 with a three second margin over second place timekeeper Scott Jacobsen. All of the top 10 oneloop riders scored zero. A secret check greeted the two-loop riders as they hit the first possible check location on the second loop. This check was the check-in for the only special test of the day which was a 7.2 mile stretch with a speed average requirement of 36 mph. This test rolled in and out of rocks and sandwashes and allowed only the top five riders to lose just one point. The next five riders dropped two points each. The two-point scores were the most common and stretched back in the results past the magic number 29, which was the finishing position of none other than Bob Balentine. This was Bob 's first ride since he lost the lower section of his right leg while pre-running the Baja Internacional course. Bob seems to be back in the running with his fourth place Open AA Four-stroke finish and we hear he's gearing up for the Parker 400. You just can't keep a good man down. Dirt Rider magazine 's Bob Carpter won the B overall for the second enduro in a row, this time just three seconds a head of 250cc B winner Robert Burtis. Carpenter shouldn't be a B rider long at this rate as CRC watches the rider results pretty closely. Open C winner Bill Throckmorton sho uld know this by now as he and 250cc winner Darrell Norman scored so well that CRC has promoted them to the ranks of the B riders. Results 2 LOOP OVERALL: 1. Harden hot at D·38 Barking Spider By Loretta Pipkin CALEXICO, CA, JAN. 9 Team Husky's Scot Harden opened the D-38 racing season with the overall win in the Fudpucker Racing Team's Barking Spider Hare and Hound. Although he got a rough start on the first loop of 12 miles, Harden closed the gap by check one to dice with Leon Livingston, also Husky 500mounted. They played in the desert, but it was Harden blowing into home check with a one-minute lead over Livingston with Paul Eddy (Yam) third, three minutes back . Out on the second loop, a 25-miler run four tim es, Livingston seized . While Harden was flying , Craig Corda was moving into striking distance. Livingston got going again to place second, but Corda's luck did not hold as a rock hit his helmet at 60 mph. The Bell kept his head intact but it took a wh ack, deeply denting the fiberglass. Vets Monte Lee and Claude Maynard diced for four loops. " It was great," quipped Maynard, " bu t on the last one Lee just pulled away." Ed Mundy dogged both Vet leaders, waiting for a mistake that never came. Mundy took third in class. The 125s were hopping as Jamie Tucker and Kirk Hester moved from Amateur to Expert and finished 1-2. Roger Adsit took th e Senior class win, just ahead of W.e. Thornton. Skeeter Hollenbeck was back in action after a lengthy layoff and finished third. • Results OPEN EX: 1. Scot Harden (HuI); 2. Leon Livingston (HuI); 3. Randy Hollenbeck (Husl . OPEN AM : 1.
