TEN YEARS CAN-AM SONICMX AGO The AMA Grand National season began with an upset as Mike Han ey scored the win in the opening night TT of the traditional doubleheader at Houston's Astrodome. For II of the 25 laps, Triumph rider Haney had trailed Yamaha 's Kenny Roberts, bu t Roberts clipped a ha yba le and lost a lot of time. At th e finish Randy Scott was second with Jim Odom third. O n th e following evening, Robert s ac hieved his revenge as he topped 'em all in the short track. Gary Scott was second with O do m bagg in g another third. Marty Tripes (CZ) and R ich Thorwaldson (Suz) staged a mudfight in the opening round of the Winter-AMA Series in Orlando, FL. They were tied after two motos , but Tripes put in a better rid e through the goop in the third to tak e th e overa ll win. G ary Semics (H us) was third ahead of Brad La ckey (Kaw).
