chassis went over to Scott's Scooter Service for a suspension set-up . The mods to our Suzuki would applyto most single-shock motorcycles. Scott's takes down information on the ri d . er 's weight, height, riding style, main riding area, where he sits on the bike and skill level. The type of competition the bike is intended for is also taken into account. Those statistics are matched to a file of records to help get the suspension in the ball park. In many cases , a Scott's set- up needs no dia lin g in . One racer we know ha d his YZ490 done and raced it as-is when the forks and shock were returned. Each fork and shock receives a different modification. There is no kit. Most of today's fork assemblies are the same excepting tolerances an d valving. Scott's set the clearance on a new set of damping rods and made the damping more progressive. Scott's a lso uses a special oil in the for ks th a t is included in the kit price, but separa tely would cost about $5. 16 a pint. It does not need to be cha nged as often as regular oil. T he rear shock was reval ved slig htly to decrease compression damping in the initial stage of travel and received fresh oil. The fork set- ups come in three price ranges: $39.95, $65.95 and $79. The last is for limited applications - mainly '78-80 Honda CR models. Because all shocks are so different, there are no set prices. Ours was $69.95 and most shocks should be in that neighborhood. The full race shock kit goes for around $139.95 and ha s new internals that decipher between big and little bumps. Because the service is so individualized, we recommend that int erested persons contact Scott's and talk to them before making the decision. Once the PE was all together and some routine jetting hassles sorted ou t, we headed out to ride it. Duri ng the initial impression riding of the P E o ur testers had felt that they were [orced to sit forward. The extended front travel rid the bike of that feeling . The forks seemed p lush and well-controlled. Time did not allow a grea t deal of dialing in on the rear shock, but if nothing else , the oi l change was needed with the amount of miles we ha d on the P E. O ther than a little newer feeli ng action, we couldn't tell too m uc h difference in the rear shock performance. The front forks showed a more definite improvement. Finding the difference in the engine was not hard. Just off o f idle the engine felt th e same. Mid -range was a little better, but the real improvement was on top. The engine came on the pipe smoothly and harder, then kept on pulling even harder where the power had dropped off before. Rideability was not affected. We started with a tired bike and ended up with a nearly fresh one. For the money spent the improvement was worthwhile. We wouldn't take a new PE and do these modification before we needed to do some work anyway, unless we were very ho tsh ot riders and wanted the full horsepower treatment. The steps we went through would freshen up most bikes. If you have a tired scoot that you are replacin g next yea r and riding this year, or if you want the 100% edge, give these folks a try. • Klemm R eserach, 6748 Tahitian Cr., Yorba Linda, CA 92786, 714/970· 5299.
