Ward finally broke free of the pack and began to reel in Lechien as the race neared the end. " I thought 1 would be able to catch him," cornmented Ward later, "but about four la pped riders got in my way on the last lap. " Ward had to settle for second for the moto and second overall as Lechien proved he is a serious threat to the more established stars . O 'Mara fin ished in the num ber three position, with Myersco ugh beating Kehoe for fourth p lace and fourt h overall ahead of Kehoe and Suzuki pilot Gary Bowman. 500 Pro Donnie Cantaloupi put th e power to the ground and roosted to the first moto holeshot. " I used to race flattrack ," noted Cantaloupi later, " so 1 know how to get a good flagstart." With Cantaloupi out front, Breker and Chandler argued over second in front of Maico nder Allen Berluui. On lap two Chandler beser ked th e down hill and moved into the lead. Cantalo upi stayed close for a couple of laps, but Chandler eventually opened up a safe lead as Breker challenged Cantaloupi for second. Breker slipped around the Sand Hill hero while Berlu tti and Yamaha rider Tim Locey diced for founh place. Suddenly Chandler's bad luck struck again, thi s time it was a thrown chain that did him in . Breker took th e win ahead of Cantaloupi, Locey , BerIutti and Yamaha rider Warren Reid. Chandler managed to re-sprocket the chain an d finish 25th. Cantaloupi doubled hi s number of perfec t starts at today's race as he led the field on lap one of the second moto, with Reid and Breker close behind. Chandler bailed off in th e mud and remounted in 36th position and charging. Magoo was all over the track as he fought his way past slower riders and moved into the top 10 by .lap five. Meanwhile Reid . t\~: bobbled and Breker took over second and began to pressu re the leader. Breker slipped by and into the lead, but Cantaloupi powered back alongside and the two riders touched with Breker taking a tumble. Breker quickly remounted and held on to fourth at the checkers as Reid made a strong drive to finish third behind Larson and Cantaloupi. Chandler finished a highly commendable fifth place! Overa ll , Cantaloupi took the win followed by Breker, who leads th e series in points, Larson, Reid and Canadian Ross Pederson, who posted 7·6 mo to scores . Mini Expert Top 80cc Expe rt rivals Paul Den is and I Larry Broo ks conti nued their classic battle today as Denis piloted his Kawasaki to the first moto win, wi th Broo ks taking the checkers first in the second race . Den is posted a second moto DNF with a leaking crank seal. Brooks' come-from-behind second moto win clinched the overall win for theday , with Kawasaki riderWil liam Surra tt picking up second overall ahead of fellow KX rider Don Ch urch. Two more Kawasaki riders, Kyle Lewis and Scott Brown , rounded ou t the top five. Vet Master Yamaha-mounted Charles Smart dominated the Vet Mast er cla ss, posting two rnoto wins to take the overall victory.
