Poovey pops for Ft. Worth Regional indoor ST win
By Frank Harrison
FT. WORTH, TX, JAN. 8
Terry Poovey scored his first wi n for Team
'H onda by taking th e main eventof th e Mike
Kidd-promoted $4000 AMA Regional indoor
short track. It hap pened before a near sell-out
crowd as the Tarrant County
Conventio n Center hosted its
first AMA Class C race in IO
years.
Kidd put it all together in cooperation with Great American Motorcycle Shows and almost filled the domed
stadium - the 'largest crowd ever to
see a Class C motorcycle event in
north Texas to our knowledge. Kidd
. not on ly did his homework, but took
care of the press , radio interviews, the
, hundreds of details for officials, program, etc. With only seven hours
sleep in the previous 48 hours he still
managed a third in the main (h is
first race - in six months) and took
home his own SIOO and the trophy
dash. .
.
With a field of n ine Novices, 17
Juniors, and no less than 10 of the 20
Experts present with National
numbers, all th rown .into the same
races , the crowd knew they were in
for a top notch and typical indoor
polished concrete sla m bang show.
The program consisted of eight
scratch heats, four heats, two semi s, a
trophy dash, and the main. Scrat ch
heats of one row of riders showed no
great action but were won respectively by Poovey, Bubba Sh obert,
.10. Novi ce.Duane Duvall.Dave.Bradley,
~
Billy Herndon, Tim Mertens, Scott
Adams and promoter Kidd.
All this set th e stage for the real
action of the regular heats with two
rows each. T he first heat started off
with Dave Bradley (Oklahoma Fixture Co.) leading Bubba Shobert only
to have a red flag crash in turn one.
On the restart Shobert (Megacycle
Cams Kaw) was quickest with Bradley on his tail and T.J . Houghton in
th ird, but another crash brought out
the red flag . The third restart saw
Shobert again quickest followed by
Bradley and Team Grayboy's Dave
Hebb. Houghton, from fourth, moved
on Hebb fast and the finish was Shobert, Bradley and Houghton.
Second heat was relatively tame
with Belleville (IL) Honda's Tim
Mertens taking the lead with Oklahoma 's Ro nni e J ones on his tail followed by Poovey and the lone California Nov ice Dan McDonnell in
fourth. J ust before the white flag,
Poo vey put .the make on J ones and
got by for the finish order of Mertens,
Poovey , Jones and McDonnell.
The third heat settled down after
th e first lap with everyone in front
comfortably seated to finish Kidd,
Scott Adams, Rusty Gourley and Rudy

Disaster of the night was heat
number four. At the start it was
hometown Honda rider Billy Herndon leading Duane Duvall and Oregon 's Dan Bennett when a crash
occurred coming out of turn two and
another in turn four. However, the
leaders kept charging while other
crashes occurred and it took two
more laps and a finish flag to stop the
remaining riders amidst all the debris.
Referee Teddy Poovey declared the
race " no contest" due to all the oil
that was spread around and a complete. re-run was in order.
The restart of the heat again saw
Herndon in the lead followed by
Bennett and Kenney Tolbert on Terry
Poo vey's old Yamaha. This time only
one crash occurred and the finish
order was Herndon, Ben nett, Tolbert
and Duane Duvall.
,A brief intermission was filled with
die grand entrance of well known
west coast announcer Larry Huffman
sitting on a headlight. Not just any
headlight, the headlight was on a
Honda three-wheeler with the front
end balanced firmly in the air by
Wheelie King Doug Domokos. Huffman introduced the evening's trophy
girl, "Miss R icha rdso n , Texas, "
a uburn-haired bea uty Karla Glover.
Miss G lo ver will also be known as
"Miss Wild West" for the Budweiser
sponsored Houston IT/short track
double header, Feb. 5-6.
A trophy dash for $100 and a five
foot trophy included Shobert, Mertens , Kidd and Herndon. From the
start of the four lap event it was Kidd
all the way followed by Shobert,
Herndon and Mertens. As Kidd col.:lc;.
