At the start it was hometown Honda rider Billy Herndon leading Duane Duvall and Oregon 's Dan Bennett when a crash occurred coming out of turn two and another in turn four. However, the leaders kept charging while other crashes occurred and it took two more laps and a finish flag to stop the remaining riders amidst all the debris. Referee Teddy Poovey declared the race " no contest" due to all the oil that was spread around and a complete. re-run was in order. The restart of the heat again saw Herndon in the lead followed by Bennett and Kenney Tolbert on Terry Poo vey's old Yamaha. This time only one crash occurred and the finish order was Herndon, Ben nett, Tolbert and Duane Duvall. ,A brief intermission was filled with die grand entrance of well known west coast announcer Larry Huffman sitting on a headlight. Not just any headlight, the headlight was on a Honda three-wheeler with the front end balanced firmly in the air by Wheelie King Doug Domokos. Huffman introduced the evening's trophy girl, "Miss R icha rdso n , Texas, " a uburn-haired bea uty Karla Glover. Miss G lo ver will also be known as "Miss Wild West" for the Budweiser sponsored Houston IT/short track double header, Feb. 5-6.
