Bonzai Bruner backinAZ By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, DEC. 26 In the grand finale of the year for Arizona motocross, Bryan Bruner came back in grand fashion with three out of four moto wins in the Mini Experts. Brian recovered a couple of weeks sooner, and a lot stronger, than mo st had thought he would after a broken collarbone put hi m out for almost a month. While Bruner was burnin g up th e Mini co mpetition, the Dircks brothers were do ing it again. If thei r first motos looked like pract ices for them, th e second run of th e Experts was just the op posi te. Gary cruised on his CR I25 fo r a first rnoto win with Todd Kessel turning in a consis tent ride for second, followed by Eric Kirk and LOP's J acque Bryant. Drey took it easy, o n a 250 Suzuki , after motorin g to a 15 seco nd lead over Bryan Hayes and Ron Watmore. The second tim e around, Pa t Win g go t the early lead with Gar y breathing dow n hi s neck . Aft er a la p, the H onda-m ou nt ed Dircks slid by for th e lead, bu t on ly for a short whi le. A sli p-up in th e sweepe r turn caused ., him to lose five pos itions. T hat mi stake had hi m hustling half the race to catch up, once he regai ned th e lead , thoug h , he never loo ked back. J onnie Deremo kept it up in second while Eric Kirk held on for th ird. In the 250's second rno to, Drey ' Dircks had mo re 10 thin k about than just staying u p. Wit h h is second io last start he had a lot of ground 10 make up. Leader R ick Nagle was ch urni ng out a hectic pace for th e rest of th e pack; Bryan Hayes kep t up in second. With five la ps down, Dircks had ca ug ht a nd put the moves o n bot h Nagle and Hayes. All three riders went bar to bar arou nd a tu rn with Nagle gett ing the best of that sit ua tion. II The Pros were ou t in force for th e last Corona Raceway race of th e '82 season a n d were greeted with a fast track. Pete Ham es was again on track as the Simi rider took o n a ll co mers. In the 250cc Money short track it was Chris Ca n non from Norco who had the lead, bu t it was short-lived as Ham es took over o n th e second lap of _ the 15 la p mai n event and was never . h ea rd fro m again . Can no n held secon d until the ninth lap when Roger Thompson o n his Trick Gas / KRW sponsored Kawasaki too k over with Dan n y Per kin s. aboard Bob Hu ntsmen 's Kawasak i, righ t behind him in th ird . Perkin s didn 't last lo ng ei ther as Rod Su lliva n's Les Birkl e Yam ah a moved in to th ird and held Mike Kir by at bay to tak e th e show spot. In th e Open Mon ey short track it .was J effJohnson on h isTony Den ius/ Fo ntana Rad iator Honda who got off o n top wi th H am es second and Rod Sull ivan th ird. It took Hames lon ger this time, but nevert heless, he took over the lead o n the nint h la p. T hey locked into position from there on Jeff Johnson (37R), Pete Hames (76R) and Rod Sullivan (16E) battle at Corona's ST. ou t and it was H am es. J ohnson and Sullivan at th e checkered. The 250cc Money half mi le was a . wire to wi re romp for H am es. Mike Kirb y got off second, but was hav ing jetting problems and Roger Thompson had no trouble getting by. Kirb y rode his heart out trying to keep his posit ion, and he was a ble to hold on for nine laps. Craig Howard got by and the front three were set, and with five laps remain ing, no on e was abl e to change positions. The Open Money half m ile saw Chris Cannon a boar d hi s TR Industr ies /Simpson sponsored Harley break on top with Roger Thompson 's Mike Mockbee-tuned Yam aha second and Ham es third. Ham es got by T hompson by th e second lap and went after Johnson. On lap twelve , H am es fell by th e wayside, out of ga s, and had to wat ch as J eff J ohnson too k over th e third spot. Faria , who was un abl e to attend the ga theri ng, moved sou th at the sta rt of the seaso n to race in sout hern Ca lifornia. The move paid off for the popular 25 year-old as he wo n a n um ber of main events, p icked up a lucrative new spo nsor (Shoe i) and, fin ally, received a check for $2968 for tak ing th e top spo t in th e 1982 point cha se. For the seco nd year in a row, Ron Blanton captured th e Second Divis ion point fund. Blanton edged second year rider T im McCasland in the standings and picked up a check for $682 in th e process. Watch for both in First Division in 1983. Rick Miller was named as the Most Improved Rider in 1982. Miller started the season in Second Division at Ven- . tura 'and came on to cap ture the First Division Vent ura Track Championship. The loudest and longest cheer of th e n igh t for an indiv idual award arose wh en popular Tom Burba was presented th e 1982 Hard Luck Award. Burba won h is first ever Scratch main this season at San Bernardino. Bill Hancock -received th e Windlord Racing Golden Eag le Award for his dedi cati on to th e Jun ior Speedway program. Mike Mazzacane was vot ed top Divi sion T wo rid er of th e year. Bel Ray has p ut Mazzacan e o n th eir full supp ort program for th e 1983 season as a rewa rd for win ni ng the 1982 awa rd. Mark Dwyer was pi cked as the top Third Division rid er of th e year. Dwyer's aw ards included a KRW Helm et whi ch will come with a cus tom paint job and fitting as well as a sponsorsh ip of goggles, len ses a nd tear-offs from Oakl ey for th e 1983 season.
