Out of a sling a month ago. George Holland (53) grabbed third. Dave Hollis (H45) was top Euro-bike 250cc. rnoto charge up the Saddleback start hill with Honda privateer J im Tarantino and Hannah close behind. Tarantino remounted and began a charge that wo uld carry him from last to eighth at the checkers. Yamaha star Rick Johnson mo ved into third on la p two with new Suzuki teamster Scott Burnworth running fourth. Hannah and Bailey rode handlebar-to-handlebar throughout most of lap three before Hannah edged past the " Little Professor" and took over the lead. At the midpoint of the moto Johnson moved up to take second from Bailey. Johnson tri ed to close on the leader Hannah but time was short and the checkers came out first for the Hurricane. Johnson fin ished second ah ead of Bailey, Burnworth and Kawaskai's Kent Howerton. _ Bailey agairi led the pack down Banzai Hill as the second moto began with Hannah and Johnson tra iling. Johnson swept past Hannah on the second go-'round as Bailey clung to the lead. Hannah found a few more ponies on the next lap and powered past Johnson, set-up Bailey on Banzai and moved into his favo rite position, first. As Hannah opened his lead to five seconds, Johnson fell off the pace with a rear suspension problem and Tarantino moved into third ahead of Kawasaki rider Billy Liles, Burnworth and Yamaha-mounted " Rocket Rcx " -Staten-who was making a rare appearaqce. Howerton wen -t out with a broken frame and the pos itions were set for the fin ish . Hannah picked up the overall with Bailey taking second, Burnworth third, Tarantino fourth , Lil es fifth and Johnson- hanging on to claim sixth overall. 126 Pro Barnett jumped to the ear ly lead of the first moto with Suzuki rider Chris Heisser running second ahead of Ward and Honda teamster Johnny O'Mara. By lap two Ward was into second as Barnett had already stretched a four second lead. O 'Mara slipped past Heisser on the next lap and Yamaha 's J im Gibson soon followed. . Positions remained the sam e for most of th e moto until Ward began charging in the final laps and reeled in Barnett. Ward closed to within a couple of seconds of the leader, bu t bobbled with one lap remaining and dropped to th ird behind Barnett and O 'Mara. Suzuki teamster George Holland led the second moto start with Yamaha's Ron Lechein running second ahead of Barnett. Lechein fell on the finish line turn and Barnett went down with him. Heisser and Ward passed Barnett as he remounted. Barnett qu ickly regained h is momentum, flying past Heisser and Ward, and then closing on Holland. Holland held off his teammate for a few turns, but then Barnett moved into the front position. Ward got on the gas again as the moto neared the end and passed Holland and slow ly closed on Barnett, this time staying upright bu t once again coming up short at the checkers. Holland earned third overall behind Barnett and Ward. O 'Mara came from a terrible start to finish eighth.and place fourth overall ahead of Heisser, 500 Pro The most excit ing race of the da y was th e 500cc Pro battle between Chandler and Glover. Glover won th e first rnoto drag race to the top of Banzai with Yamaha rid ers Donnie Cantaloupi and Warren Reid running second and th ird ahead of Chandler . Magoo soon dispatched Reid and Can tal oupi and moved up to challenge Glover. Chandler slipped int o • th e lead on lap fo ur with Glover stay- ing close. New Honda rider Goat Breker mo ved into th ird as Cantaloupi and Reid dropped back and the top positions were set. Chandler and Glover flew down Banzai Hill in a dead heat as the second moto started with Glover just edging Chandler on th e turn at the base of Webco Hill. Chandler nearly th rew the bike awa y as he did a horrendous tankslapper that knocked Re id's machine out from under him. Reid was unhurt and remounted at th e back of the pack. Chandler ducked under Glover on la p three, but Glover repassed a lap later. The two riders continued to _trade the lead throughout the rnoto and the outcome was in doubt right to th e last turn with Chandler just . edgi n g out Glover fo r th e win. Yamaha priva teer Juan Benavidez rode an exci ting race to move into th ird a t th e checkers wit h Breker pl acing fourth .
