It was one of those something- for-everybody nights . at the Commotion By The Ocea n . Fox Night brought herds of faxes and hordes of fox hunters. Music fans were treated to live rock 'n' roll as they will be for the next several weeks. Racing fans were treated to some of the best action of the year even as 22 riders fell down to thrill the vicarious mayhem enthusiasts. The ba nd Orpheus was so g lad to have a gig, they played right through the Natural Anthem. And by Event 15, the cry of "more beer" was finally answered when another beer truck arrived to satiate the thirsty (and tipsy) fans. Even Ventura Channel 6 was on hand to tape the racing to show at a later date - but only for fans with a sense ' of humor who appreciate out-of-focus speedway .in the dark. Oh well, it 's the thought that counts. Ah yes, the racing. " Flyin' Mike " Faria started a new streak as he won his sixth Scratch main of the year here. And Pennsylvania rider Warren Diem enjoyed his D·I debut so much, he won the Handicap main. In the Handicaps, one thing became quickly apparent - it's no fair letting Diem start on the zero . He 's just too good. He won all three of his rides with flawless performances. Tim McCasland, also coming off the zero, won his first two rides, including a squeaker over Rick Miller in the semi. In the other semi, Sacramenta rider Pat Linn, in his Ventura debut, went down in turn fou r directly in the path of hard-charging Mike Curoso who catapulted over the fallen bike and crashed, only his experience saving him from a painful munch. This cured Curoso of Ventura for the evening as he headed south. Diem outgated McCasland and easily won the follow- the-leader main. Miller and Rob Pfetzing were next across the line. Diem, who is not long on tall, got a lift - literally - from Keith Larsen, enabling him to plant one where it counts on the towering trophy girl. By reading th e box score, it looks like business as usual. Faria wins. Again. Ho hum. No way. Rick Miller, in only his third night of Scratching, not only kept th e heat on Faria in two different races , but proved he belongs with the Good Guys. After Faria outgated everyone in his semi, suddenly there was Miller applying the heat in turn two and keeping it on the rest of the race, cutting Faria no slack whatsoever. It was Miller's best ride ever. He looked a lot like - gasp - a giant-sized Lance King. J ust to prove it was no fluke, they did it again in the main. "Flyin' Mike" flew away again, but Miller stayed on his tail throughout, looking for the mistake that never came. The kid can gate, and he ca n ride. In D·2 action, Chris Reich ard t finished behind Chris Martin after a furious and exciting rive-lap battle in the heats but came back 10 win the main easily for the second time in three weeks. Mike Smart, up from D3, managed a second on a sick bike. Oxnard local Guy Helderlein was fift h.
