Sandona, M iller get
second wins at IMS
By Scott Daloisio .
SAN BERNARDINO. CA, J U NE 16
It may well have been T eam
Windlord night a t John La
Douceur 's Inland Motorcycle
Speedway tonight as teammates
John Sandona and Bryce Eikelber~er
posted wins in the Scratch and Third
Division mains.
Sandona (Wi ndlord/Super Seer/
Esprit Godden) made it two Scratch
mains in a row in a near duplicate
performance of last week. It was a
dead heat out of the gate with San.do na , coming from the pole, taking
command in tum two. Mik e Faria
(Cody Products/ Oakley Jawa ) immediately began to pressure Sandona
while Alan Christian ( STP Godden )
and Bobby Schwartz (Bel-Ray/Bell
Helmets Godden ) battled for third.
Faria kept trying to go th e long route
on the ou tside to get by Sandona and
managed to pull even in turn three on
the final lap. Sandona was able to
fight off the challenge and took one of
the largest margins of victory in an
IMS Scratch main this season - two
bikelen g ths,
Rick Mi ller (Eclipse/ Bel· Ray/JT
Westlake) won all three of h is Handicap races incl uding the main event
in what may h ave been the best ride of
the night - make that the season at IMS. Starting on the 10, Miller took
the lead at the start over Denny Scopel lite (Hot Moves Weslake), who
wheelied at the li ne. Schwartz started
on the 40 and moved into second by
the end of lap one. The international
star immedately moved o n to th e
second-year rider's tail and began to
a p p ly the pressure. Schwartz ap p lied
extreme pressure to th e you ngster as
he tr ied every trick in th e book to
make th e pass by running the cushion,
but h e was unable to dethrone Miller
who became th e first two-rime IMS
Handicap winner of 1982. After th e
ra ce, th e exu bera nt Mill er sai d, " I
could see him in every corner, so I j us t
gave it every th ing I had." Long after
th e races were over, Schwartz was seen
in th e parking lot co ngra tu la ting
Miller in a true show o f sportsman sh ip.
Ed Castro (R id i n ' H i ~h J awa )
returned from the injury list in fin e
style as he won his first IMS Second
. Division main of th e sea son. Cas tro,
coming from the 10. ~ot the gate a nd
led th e event unt i l Don Bovee
(O'Neal's 76 Jawa ) went by on the
o utside in turn four on the opening
revo lution. Castro reclaimed th e lead
on th e back chute on lap two and rode
th e rest of the way to sta rter Paul
Neighbor's checkered flag. Chris Re ich a rd t (G e ne Pl ue 's Mot o rcycl es
Godden ) moved into the number two
spo t when he got Bovee on lap three
but was unable to catch th e snea king
Castro. .
Desert Hotli
Kenny Bidney (Jawa ) got the lead
at th e ga te in the Third Divi sion main
but it was Sandona 's teammate, Bryce
Ei ke lber g er (W i n d lo rd G odden ),
movi ng ins ide in turn two for the lead
a n d eventual victory. Keifer Doege (B
& M Foam Fabrics Weslake) passed
. everyone exce p t Eikelberger o n h is
wa y to a well-earned seco nd pl ace
fin ish .
June 23 will feature Father 's Day
passes for all IMS fan club members.
Popular John Cook is sch eduled to
return from England June 30. As well
as th e usual fireworks Cook supplies
on th e track, there will be a fireworks
spectacular in the sk y on the same
night.

Normally this run takes place at the

Ca lifornia Enduro Association was
up to the challenge with their two

the California championship series. _
Tom Webb, riding a 430 Husky,
topped an extreme ly talented group,
both from southern a nd northern
Cal ifornia a t the two da y even t. Dropping two points for run, the SoCaI
rider bested Jeff H enning a nd his 250

Jr. bozoed out by burning two tricky
checks and Grant Palenske broke the
shock on his Maico. Others suffering
ill fortune included Jim Wilson who
punctured two tires, Greg Newland
who wrapped his foot under some rocks and Garner Pal en ske. who
pitched himself awkwardly and was
ta lking in a very high voice for
sometime.
At this point in the series, Webb
closed the gap cons idera bly on Bertrum. With just two events left , the
Dirt Bike editor used his " h om e territory " to his advantage, narrowing
the point spread on Bertram. Webb
dropped two points on Saturday and
just one second on Sunday.
