Chandler, Pelkey, Hurst haul at Sidewinders TT By Clay Light CLACKAMAS, OR, MAY 28 There couldn't have been any better way to kick off the Memorial Day weekend than to be at the Sidewinders T'T, which saw American Honda rider Doug Chandler take the Novice main event with Junior sensation Barry Pelkey (Sim pson/CoAl beating last week 's winner Randy Green. The Expert main event was also a "seat edger" which saw Brad Hurst (Panther Racing/KRW/ Woodland Hon/Tri ) take the race over last week's winner Frank Word III (Sco tt USA/Vern's Air Sales/Out Front No. Plates/RIleB H-D). The Novice main event had Chandler put his water-cooled Honda into the lead of the 12-rider, two-row field. Fellow Californian Joe Knight (Ya m) followed in second with George McBee (Yam), Ryan Fisher (Vern's Air Sales Yam) and Danny Bennett (ND/Bel~Ray Han) giving chase. Bennett, who got orr poorly, was closing the gap on McBee, who fell prey to Fisher who wanted to put a pass on Chandler for th e lead. Sound co nfus ing ? It was. Ch andler wasn't to be den ied the win (a nd a well earned one) after last week's DNF. In the Junior main. Pelk ey was on th e pole position, bu t that didn 't stop Emory Gra y and h is Yamaha from taking th e lead while Pelkey poured it on in second, fleeing flying Randy Green (Ameri can Hon ). Ben Zakarian (Yam) trailed in fourth but managed to wor k past Green a nd Pelkey on th e first lap, also getting by Gra y to tak e th e lead . Zakari an held a smooth lin e in first with Gray second , Green th ird a nd Pelkey and Danny Moore (Amer ica n Hon ) arg uing over fourth. G ra y yielded 10 Green as did Zaka ria n, who al so fell to Pelkey, wh o quickl y challenged Green in a duel for the lead . Pelkey got a good drive out of the downh ill co rner and made hi s move on Green to ta ke th e lead co ming pa st the tower, wh ere th e announcer had everyone on their feet with the tight rac e between th e sensa tional Juniors. Pelkey pounded the pack to tak e the win over Green, Zakarian, Gray and Brian Yocum (Yam). After all the Expert restarts and spec ta tor brawls, th e Expert main was underway and saw Word the third tak e th e lead on his XR 750 over Hurst, Micke y Fay (American Hon), Mike Inderbitzin (Tri ) a nd Darrell Hendrickson (T ri), Hurst was quick to swoo p up Word on the second lap whe n Word got out of sha pe in a chop py co rner to take the lead over Fay, who held down third, and a fourth place argument betw een Jeff Campbell (Elite/ H a rry Lill y/Ou t Front No . Plates/Simpson/Vern's Air Sal es Yam ), Brett Barkman (Han ) and Inderbitzin. Campbell settled into th e fourth place spot toward the latter stages in the l2-lap event. Hurst and Word continued their battle for first until the last lap when Hurst decided to motor away with th e win.
