Team Honda smokes Bayla nds FT By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CA, MAY 26 Team Honda's Do ug Chandler and Da n Moore took on the very fast three-eighths-mile dirt oval at Ba yla nds Raceway Par k • tonight and once again came out the big winners. For Chandler, it was his 15th main event victory and the start of another record setting series. The two Team red /white/blue riders ran off with the 250cc Expert show with only R ick Hocking working around Fra nk Sanchez to keep it from a H o n d a rout. Hocking's Kn ig h tframed, Billy Scott air-cooled Yamaha will likely be what he rides when the Winston Pro Series goes to Santa Fe Park. . Pa co Sanchez took his Honda Peninsu la wa ter-cooler to the forefront of the 250cc Expert show with Do ug in tow, bu t coming do wn the fro nt stra igh t fo r th e co m p letion of th e first la p , C ha ndler too k over with a fin e pass a nd was lo ng gone. H oc kin g and Eddie Caba llero were working to the fro nt when Sanchez got a littl e off the proper line and Hocking ate him up. Chandler's win was a convincing straightaway with Moore at least six bikes up o n Hocking who announced h e wo u ld ret urn to the Pro scene and get Jim Filice's old number. Sanchez held onto fourth over Billy Scott, who promptly gave it to Ra y Abramns for an overhaul before heading east for the Winston Pro Sries tour. Brian Pecore and the Ang Rossi Yamaha mixed it up with Chris Pa ul son on the Fremont Yamaha for 360cc Expert with Pecore wi n ni ng. Turnidge tops Oregon Trail 100 'By Steve Hammer VALE, O R, MAY 23 Brad T urnidge showed up and g un n ed dow n a n o ther first overall wi n today at the O regon T iaillOO. Brad is getting "bad;" this was hi s fif th straight overall win th is season, and he did it with ease . T urnidge's win was made even easier by the dusty, rocky 30-mile course which destroyed his competition's machinery and took out half the field. The BLM gave the sponsoring club, Snake R iver M.C., .a n all-new race area Ior this event. but unfortunately , dust and rocks were abundant. The start was signaled by a dropped banner and a huge cloud of dust. Immediately roaring into the lead wa s Clint Stephans (480 Hon). Stephans was really on the gas, and he proceeded to pull away with a blistering pace. Following were Turnidge (495 KTM), Mike Kelly (125 Suz ), Steve Henry (480 Hon) and Ro n Dillon (490 Yam). As the leaders battled, the dusty followers battled the rocks. Only miles from the start, several riders were seen nursing flattened tires and exhausts and ripped off foot pegs. Fortunately, no ser ious injuries were reported. At the end of the first la p , the order was Stephans, Turnidge, Dillon, H en ry and Kell y. H en ry didn 't go out for another la p as his cl utch soured and Bill Do wers (430 H us) began to move u p from a horrible start. Leader Ste phans' super ride came to a h a lt when h is rear shock exploded halfway th ro ugh the seco n d lap , and Dillo n fla tten ed a front tire, slowing him down. The disasters continued with Kelly h ittin g a cow, crashing and breaking a throttle cable. This unbelievable string of mishaps allowed the already ta lented T umidge to assume an unreal lead which he held to the end. Dowers continued to move up despite a huge hole in his exhaust; he managed to bag second. R ick McCune (430 Hus) finished third overall, first Old Timer, and C urt Dice (Mai) won ' the 250cc Expert class with a super fourth overal l. l25cc Expert class winner Willis Taylor (Kaw) was fifth overall, and the first Novice was Jerry Bennett (430 H us).
