Thompson tough at Huetter" By Judy Roe COEUR d'ALENE. 10, JUNE 6 Over 70 riders were on hand to race in an exciting program tonight at Huetter Speedway's flat .track, and spectarorsIined, , the entire fenceline to enjoy the show the riders provided. Lowell Thompson, a National motocross champion, dominated the Mini Experts but was beaten for the first time this year in the second heat by cousin Brian Thomson. Lowell also took first place in the I25cc Amateur class , with Brian placing second. Both ride 80cc bikes in the 125cc class . Third place in the 125cc class went to Andy James, one of the few 125s that was in the hunt all night. Lowell also placed third in the 250cc Amateur class overall, again on his 80cc Yamaha. Chris Verdahl was second place in the 250 Amateur class after one of th e best highside saves ever seen on th e Huerter track with Ken Peterso n first. In the first 250cc Expert heat, Tony Cruickshank, coming from a back row start, held first place for two laps before his bike seized, and Arney Wick moved into first place, with Kevin Snider second and Ken Dietz in third. Snider tr ied to close in on Wick but couldn 't make up the distance and finished second with Dietz third and Jeff Selden fo urt h. The third heat was a photo fin ish - Wick jumped into th e lead and held it easily for the entire race until just before the checkered flag when Snider kept th e pressure on Wick. Wick detected a knock in his Honda engine, so he began backing off a lap before the checkered flag. Sn ider turned his throttle on in the last corner and snapped Wick a t the flag for the win. Dietz placed third on a Honda. Wick was the overall winner with Sn ider second and Dietz third. In the 500cc Expert main, Ron Yamamoto got by Wick in the pit corrner on the first lap. Wick maintained a distance just far enough away from Yamamoto's fender so he was able to snap around him on the outside to take the lead , crossing the finish line with Yamamoto behind, Tony Cruickshank in third and Bill Capellen in fourth. Severa l businesses in the area sponsored contingency prizes this week, which we are very grateful for: Brack's Supply, J Be D Stereo, Bart Nelson Concrete Foundations, Kootenai Saw Be Cycle, Coeur d'Alene Honda, Advanced Auto, Don LaVoie Distributing.
