The Pfeiffer brothers were running third overall when Kent took over for th e last tim eat OJos Negros. But then a close call hit him. " I was going too fast on on e of th ose fast gravel roads. I co u ld n't sto p and there was a barbed wire fence, so I grabbed too much fro nt brake and crashed ," related Ken t. " I was out for a second, then I got up a nd I thought I heard so me body say 'G ive him au.' The specta tors pointed the wa y and I too k off: ' Kent finish ed the race wi th a cut on his lower li p. Their tim e of 8:13:54.80 bested th e 8:24:42.41 of Ashcraft a nd Kell y, who were th e next ones to fin ish . The nex t bik e in was the Kaplan and Ogilvie Honda, and they placed th ird in Class 21. Kapl an said that hi s inj ured hand was sore, and that Ogilvie had ridden all but abou t a hundred miles. Another Honda was the next bik e into the fin ish , but it wasn't th e Steams/Scheffers machine. Stearns, was the reported victim of another ma n-made jump, near Jamul, a nd ' was out of th e race with a dislocated shoulder. The Honda in was the CR480R of Denby Dailey and Ted Vanden Raadt, and th ey too k third in Class 22, suffering only one flat tire a nd a motor tha t "didn't ru n too well on top." . Kurt Pfeiffer contin ued h is Class 20 win streak as he fini shed fora tim e of 9:03:46.82, taki ng the flag with a brok en rear hub and severa l dangling rea r spokes. "I go t it right at Ojos when I h it a rai n ru t," sai d Pfeiffer, "other tha n tha t no problerns the bi ke ran great." In Class 30, J ackson was not Erl's origi na lly scheduled partner, but the pairing worked very well as th ey took the win by one minute over Bell and Drean after Erl 's crash . Jackson, who started, had some problems of his own in the early going: " I couldn't see and I cras hed on ce, lightly. It was so muddy th at everythi ng would stick to yo ur goggles. You pull your goggles off a nd yo ur eyes would fill with mud. It was some thi ng else." After Erl's cra sh, Jackson rod e the rest of the race , from San Matais Pass to the fin ish . The team 's winni ng number was 8:52:44.77 to the 8:53:50.79 turned by Bell and Drean. Ron Bishop was th e first Class 38 rider into the fini sh after h e and Watkins had staged a lat e race cha rge to ge t back in front of Etchart a nd . Wood. But th ey didn't get far enough in fron t, and Wood arrived at th e lin e and took th e win . " No problems," sai d Wood, " A little dust, but no problems."
