And, for the second week in a ro w, Carl Cranke was the sole SOcc Intent en trant on Fred Cameron's 75cc Fantic, zeroing th e ,co urse .a nd zipping throu~h the da y s tests in 2261 seconds (points). Starting at six in th e morning from Mulkey ORV Park, Cranke led th e 174ent ra nt s for a check out/warm up lap aro und the motocross/grass track wh ich would be the day's final test. A few short miles la ter, rid ers arr ived at the acceleration test, an approximateIy 200 meter drag race against the clock with th e ela sed tim e multi- plied by five tor the rider 's score) on pavement. On the loop, thus attcked twice, was a poim-to-point terrain test, 1.5 miles of " a little of everything-tight trail, fire roads, mud bogs," accord. ing to overall Timber Mountain win. ner Chip Howell, including a challenging hill. _ Hines recorded the fastest time of th e day on the first loop when he scaled the trail in 375 seconds (poin ts). Knarr also had a good run with his 379. Rain broke for the second loop, mak ing the test times co nsidera bly slower the second time around. Curiously, it didn't seem to affect KTM · mounted Mi chael H eff tn er who eq ualled his first loop score of 422, II seconds (po ints) faster than the next fastest rider, Hines. Though the trail and schedule was extremely difficult, a number of riders DNF. Matt Cullins and Zack Elkins, 1-2 in 175cc Intent last week , both went out with engi ne failures. 500cc Intent r ide r Ra y Cosgrove dropped out on th e second loop due to sickness, possibly too much nerveind uced acid in his stomach. " It's happened befor e; I kept getting sick at checks," he said. " Finall y, I just ran out of energy ." After getting back to Mulkey, riders faced IO·man, five-lap motocrosses which used th e two and a half minute MX course plu s a grass track. The resulting races took 20 or more minutes for the fastest. However, Mother Nature, as mu ch as rider ability, played a factor in the MX. , Knarr took advantage of a couple laps run in th e dry before rain turned the hard surfaced track as slick as an unseen moss covered rock in a stream to win the first moto in 1293, fastest time for any Intent rider. Astonishingly enough, Cranke worked his way up through the pack to second, onl y to be pipped at the flag by McCall. Husky riders and classmates Ray Mungenast and Hines, who was hampered by disintegrated steering head bearings, battled back and forth , fell down and got up several times with Mungenast finally winning the second moto in 1344. Alvin McCannon, an early front-runner slowed by a first-lap crash, finished third on his Maico. Maahs put on fresh rubber, hunkered down and smoked the th ird moto, despite the slippery track, in 1265. Howell, whose engine died a coupIe times without explanation coming in and whose kick start gear apparently broke a tooth, rode cautiously to win the fourth moto in 1430 on his Yamaha IT465H. Lyle Perkins passed Robert Windham on the final lap lor second with early leader Bob Rutten , whose bike lost fourth gear early in 'the day, using only third gear to finish fourth. • Results 80 INTENT GOLD: I .
