Winkie Freitas (1) and Steve Mayfield in clo.. quarter. at Lodi. Key, Boyles, Chandler highlight Archie Clark . Memorial ST By Bill Spencer t.onr, CA. MAY 22 California short trackers came out in droves to support the Lodi M.e. annual Archie Clark Memorial tonight that would 34 benefit the Willie Crabbe fund and. along with a fine crowd. help raise the West is Best fund to over $1500. Hap jones Distributing and the jones family. Ronnie and mom. were the biggest donors at a $ I00 each . and the Crabbes would like to express thanks to all their friends who expressed their prayers and help through this difficult time. It was the largest turnout of the season and made for the best racing in some time on the newlv cut quarter-mile dirt oval. Gene Arnaiz got a tractor and blade and cut the new track. and it was smooth and extremely fast. making for '10 fast and safe night. Kudos to the club. Dennis Hill and Ann Carr for their fine performance. Winkie Freitas remained the mini whizzer to beat. taking both 80 and 1000c Expert shows on his Dave Bird Yamahas. Steve Mayfield led Winkie around in the 100cc heat and the early portion of the main. but there was no holding the mighty speedster back . Mayfield had a good tussle with Tom Carriger on the Salinas Valley Plumbing special. It took a n umber of starts to get the 250cc Experts going, but it was a reg- : ulation barn burner as it turned out. Aaron Hill. Dave Boyles and Mark Key were the protagonists at the forefront of things with Chris Carr and Doug Chandler stuck in traffic. Carr made all the right moves and took the jorgy Can-Am through the maze for a fine second place finish to Key's Yamaha while Boyles copped third over Hill, joey Knight on the ex-jim Filice mount. Billy Scott. Chandler and P.j. Sanchez. Definitely National caliber racing. Aaron Hill led out the 500cc Experts but couldn't hold the line and faded to a fourth. Dave Boyles did some fancy flashing to the front but not as neat a job as Chris Carr was doing on the Kim jorgensen Can-Am 370. Carr was the last man around the corner but dialed it up to pass for the second spot in fine style with Danny McDonald in third. The finale for the night was the usual Black Plate-only event for 15 laps with only the top 20 rated in attendance allowed. There was $150 up for grabs. but only six could muster machinery. The group drew for positions on the line and exited cleanly with Team Honda's Doug Chandler firmly in control for the distance. Mark Key took the second spot over Aaron Hill. At the end of the night when it was pay-off time, many of the riders simply turned their checks back in to the fund. showing great sportsmanship. Results 100 EX; 1. Winkie Freitas (Yaml ; 2. Campbell collects Sunny Valley n double ' By Clay Light SUNNY VALLEY. OR, MAY 23 Day two ofadoublerace STITT weekend saw a repeat of winners in the Pro class and in the I25cc A main events at Sunny Valley. The previous night's short track winner, jeff Campbell. socked it to the Pros on a borrowed Honda and took the Open A main as well for his second dou ble of the 1982 season at SOMA's TT (second double this weekend. actually). Rod Bixel smoked the 125 and the Lightweight Money races for a double of his own with jeff Harsha. who was the only winner who did not compete both days of spectacular racing at Sunny Valley Raceway. taking the 250cc A main. After a brief break in action for track preparation and time for a cool one, the respective mains were posted, and riders prepared to face the 85 degree heat. Luckily. the track is well lined with shady trees and nice grandstands. The 125cc A main had seven riders lined up for one of the best races of the day. Rod Bixel (Suz) came off the line in first position with Robert Horban ' (Hon), Wes Elam (Suz ), Brian Sheets (Suz) and Charlie Mitchell (Yam of Grants Pass) in pursuit. Bixel blasted the pack once again for the lead at the half while Horban and Elam had it out for the runner-up spot. Horban hooked his rear tire up coming out of the final turn to outdistance Elam for second. In 250cc A main action. jeff Harsha led an eight-rider pack into turn one with Brian Murphey (Bul), Bob Klum (Hon) and Scott Annis (Suz) giving close chase. Harsha had the spot to himself with Annis going around Murphey for third. which let him move up to challenge Klurn, who has quite a unique style (keep the throttle open regardless of hazards, conditions, what have you). Annis and Klum fought it out for second while Harsha took the win. Klum came out on top for second. Annis third and Murphey fourth. With the larger machines thundering on the line, the echoing four stroke single of Rich Word (R&:B Racing/MXL Suz) could be heard throughout the distant canyons. Word didn't have it. though. Campbell collected another of his famous starts. which has placed him in the main at quite a few National TIs and short tracks in the past. The southern Oregon star blazed into turn one with Word hot on his heels. Ken Percy (Bul) 'a nd Lorimer Bertonlni gave chase while a battle erupted between Campbell and Word. Campbell took the win with Word again second. The Pro main event saw seven riders revving their machines to near exhaustion. Campbell found himself in his favorite position (the lead) and used it to his advantage. Rich Word and David Whiting (Yam of Grants Pass) made contact for second with Harsha. joel Dixson and Klum giving chase. Dixson moved up to challenge Word, andthe two made contact. putting Word down but not out. Word was on the move and by the final lap found himself in second once again. Campbell was tOO far out front to catch and took the win for first place payoff. Results MAIN PRO: r . Jeff CempbeIlISuz); 2. Rich Word ISuz); 3 . Do.id Whiting (yom). LIGHTWEIGHT MONEV : t . CA, MAY 23 The Ridge Runners M.e. of Santa Cruz held their first hare scrambles this weekend at Hollister Hills SVRA. and the reviews from the riders ranged all the way from "I loved it" to "I hated itl" The Experts and juniors were the first to take to the course in what was billed as the "Kinky Hare" Scrambles. kickstarting their bikes after the sound of a shotgun blast. It was interesting to note that some of the riders were attentive enough to hear the dick of the shotgun when it misfired the first time. but others said they could hardly hear the blast when the round actually went off. How do you explain that? The riders shot off the line toward the first turn in a cloud of dust and onto the somewhat treacherous 12mile course. There have been a number of hare scrambles held at Hollister by other organizations. and while most of the t r a i Is have been thoroughly travelled. the Ridge Runners managed to find a few sections which most of the riders had never been on. The first rider. Charlie Halcomb (KTM). completed his first lap in about 35 minutes with the rest of the field following anywhere fram about 20 seconds to over half a lap behind him. There were a few dropouts after the first lap. some of them rather vocal about the fact that they had never ridden anything so terrible the "I hate it" crowd - but most of the Experts kept on going with 28 of the 44 entrants actually finishing the race. When the checkered flag came out after two hours it was Los Altos rider Pat Brown (Mai) taking the win. completing five laps. Ten other riders were able to put in as many laps, but not as quickly as Brown. . Result s veT NOV : 1. Greg Knutson (Yam); 2. Frank Civsresme (HOn); 3. Chud< Eldenon (Yem).
