When the 80cc Experts, cream of the Minis, faced off in their first encounter, Suzuki-mounted Larry Brooks who led the charge up the start hill with a seemingly unsinkable Jeff Barbacovi, aboard a Yamaha for Van Nuys Cycle, on his tail. Brooks, who only recently switched to Suzuki, was on the gas and managed 10 hold Barbacovi 10 second. The second round of action found Barbacovi out for bear, grabbing the holeshot and fighting with all his power 10 hold Brooks at bay. Brooks was burning up the track and lost no time in overtaking Barbacovi and commanding the troops. Brooks looked like a miniature of Mark Barnett, all muscle and finesse, out for back-eo-back wins.
