Years ago Clifton used to win on Honda Els in ores for DG. The question was , ca n he regain his speed? In the first rnoto of l25cc Intermediate racing, Cl ifton got the jump on the pack and carried the lead all of the way to the first wave of the checkered flag. Delgado was in second; ahead of Bill Lunney and last week s winner Sco tt Graham. There wa s little doubt that Clifton had regained his spee~. but i~ was still going to take a whi le for ~Im to smooth th in gs out. He ~s gOing f!?r it in the fin al moto but shd o ut. VALENOA, CA, MAY 16 The runni ng of the fifth annual C al iforn ia R a c in g Cl u b ' s Dunestown Grand P rix attracted close to 1000riders and a new sponsor..T he " King of Beers," Bu~ weiser chose this race to add their spons~rship to the CR C race s~ries along with Ceet Products, IR C tires, Kal-Gard, Nippondenso spark plu~s, the SoCaI Yamaha Dealers ASSOCIation and Extrude-Hone. Counting cash and con tingencies, there was $46,000 on the line. Right out of th e gate for th e combined Pro cla ss desert sta r Tom Kelly's Husky surged to a n early lead. Pete Snorteland was right on Kelly's back coming off the river ramp jump. The two of them were already ahead of Eri c MacCracken, Craig Col e and Bob Schulz. By this time, th e 250s were already mixing it up with th e slower 500s, and the first few rid ers wer e Kenny Zahrt, Jimmy Weinert and Brad McLeod. It was easier to know when th e swarm of l 25s arrived. Mike Brown had buzzed his L OP H onda right to the lead and threw that lightweight across th e river like a silver dollar - after inflation. The mass of riders trying to decide between the bridge, the water or the ra mp were slowed. A costly mistake. Joh nny o 'Mara came around in fourth , and he had no problem deci ding to take the ramp and second place in one short flight. Kelly was leading by 15 seconds by the middle of the next lap, and Snorteland was having some problems. Schu lz was still in fifth a t the turn to the river crossing, but he decided to use O'Mara 's maneuver. He did sho w that his big-bore, Simi Cycle Yamaha co uld fly just as Car as a 125, ~nd he moved right up to second, cu tu ngoff severa l riders wh o had elected to take the bridge ro ute . Schu lz sta rted closing on Kelly. With in two lap s, th ey came over that j ump elbow to brisket at max throttle, flew a nd landed together. Fro m then o n , it was Schulz's race, a nd he was abl e to ad d several seconds per lap to tak e th e day 's big win . Kell y went o n to ge t second money. The 250cc mi ssed earlier was Honda su p port rider Mike Shoemak er, who was so far up in the Open bike ra nks tha t he eventua lly fin ish ed third over a ll. The battle between Weinert , McLeod and Zahrt resolved in Zahrt's favor. In th e l25s , Brown had bu ilt a n unassailable lead, and even the high flying Johnny 0 ' couldn't catch him. O'Mara had his American Honda maxed out and was doing spectacular sky shots over the stadium j um ps on th e Intern a tiona l co urse. He was do ing double jumps wh ere mere mortals coul d only manage singles. He was closing o n Bro wn by many seco nds per lap , bu t the minutes ran ou t, and he had to settle for seco nd to Brown 's first . Results 60 NOV: 1. Se. n BI. nch .rd (y. m); 2. V i ctorvill e Suzuki-mount ed " Da ndy " Andy J efferson made it appear to be a re-run of some of h is previous performances, as he led wire to wire in both motos of th e 250cc Pro cla ss, while lapping some of th e other lads . The real race was for second, between Mike Tripes on a Husky (23), Tim Lunde (Honda, 4·2) and another H usky ri der, Da vid Gerig (35). Gerig held second for seven laps before T ripes worked past hi m and stayed there while L unde pushed Gerig across the line. It was. a good competitive go, both from a nder and spectator's viewpoint. . The second rnoto was a replay for Andy (he was flying ), but Tripes ga ve way to Lunde (thi rd .overa~1)a~d too.k th e third spo t. behind TIm, In this one for second overall. Gerig dropped to fifth (fo urt h overall ) behind Peter Murray. Ind ian Dunes' Interna tio nal T ra ck tonight, launch ing the California Racing Club's summer season of nighttime racing. The first division of l25cc Beginners attacked the turf their first time around, and Ba rr y Katz, riding out of 'Suzu ki of Van Nuys, found himself loc ked in mortal co mbat for the lead with H onda pilot Eric Casas. These two men went at each other, wheel to wheel with ha ndlebars dashing, until Casas fina lly slipped a wheel under Katz by the end of the firs t lap. Katz contined to brea th e down Casas' jersey to moto 's end, leaving behi nd a mad das h fro m third. bravely held back by Yamaha racer Rick Jordan. When the men gathered o n the grid for their second round . Casas once more established command. Behind Casas spectacular bails were taki ng place. One racer found himself thrown 15 feet over th e hand lebars, di ving deep into a berm . R ider after rider bailed off over the stadium whoops. A rough initiation to night racing. Emergi ng out of th e chaos was Todd Wimett, who snaked into second, and Dale Hooker cinc hed th e third pl ace slot . When the chec kered flag brough t an end to all the madness, Casas wheeled down victory row with backto-hack wins, Wimett cin ched second overall , and Jordan 's smooth 3-4 ride nett ed him third pl ace gold. Absolutel y one of th e tightest 250cc Pro duels of the year went on between La rry Baker; pilo tin g a Honda for O 'Neal a n d PJ -l , a nd Yamaha mounted Randy Comman s. Throughout both motos Baker fought down to the wire to keep Commans in h is place and rack up a superb pair of wins in the process. Results 125 ON I: 1. Eric C•••• (Han ): 2. Todd Wiman (Y.m); 3.
