Although the track itself was i n excellent shape. one could glimpse safari hats Iloating on the surface of the grass and an occasional machete ready to be wielded. The monsoonal weather of recent weeks had given rise to a fog of mosquitoes that threatened toclaim squatter 's rights on every exposed tract of skin. But these afflictions were minnowed by the egregious absence of numerous nubile nymphs (AKA nag gi rls). Ga ry Lauren ce sta rte d the excitement in th e 125cc Nov ice class he took th e holeshot in th e first heat. Com ing out of th e fir st turn , he was foll ow ed by Deno Farmer 's Yamaha a n d Mike Merlo on an 80cc Yamaha. Merl o 's smalle r bike didn 't seem 10 be too much o f a h andicap, though . as h e began to race Farmer for seco nd . Fa rm er wa sn ' t exac tly thrilled at th e th ough t of being beat en by a m ini. a nd he success fu lly blocked every line Merl o tried . Merlo was fi na lly able to j u m p. but Lauren ce had stretched o u t a fa irl y substantial lead , and it did not appear thai Merl o would have en oug h time to ca tch him. So much for appeara nces ; Merl o ca u gh t Laurence a nd started to pressure him. Lauren ce go t sid ewa ys, but Merlo fail ed to pass (pe rhaps he was blinded by a drop o f Lauren ce's swea t). Lauren ce took a tight line in the last berm. but Merlo look a tighter one and passed. At th e ch eck ered it was Merlo. followed by Laurence. fol lowed by Farmer. The start of the second moto saw Merlo in third again. this lime behind Frank Friedel and Deno Farmer. Bill Miller took a dive over a berm but was not injured, his crash rnattressed by mosquitoes. Merlo passed Farmer in the backstretch and jumped past Friedel in the infield for another checkered. one of {our {or the evening. Results MINI SR:' . Mike Merlo (Yemt. 2. s.phenoUIrich (Yamt 3. MAY 16 After nearly two weeks of steady, non-stop rain. the Watertown Cycle Club, under the whip of Ray Knapp, worked long hours to get their motocross track in shape and race-ready for their round of the South Dakota State Championship Series. Despite a muddy practice, the course turned into an extremely rough, beautiful, traction-filled battl eground for the near 175 cornpetitors. In the Professional ranks. the rider to beat in all three divisions was Kawasaki's Todd Elmer, as he took five of the six motos to earn three overall victories. Billy "Coyote" Stork 250s, but in th e seco nd rounds the track began to get rougher every lap, and Elmer's National ex pe rie nce proved too much for th e yo ung Rapid City rider to overcome, an d St ork had 10 settle for secon d overalls in th e 125 and 250cc ra ces. As for th e 5OOs, seri es class points lead er Mike Shurman tallied a 2-3 day behind the Kawa saki pilot for the runner-up overall slot there. First out of th e gate were the 250cc Pros. and as the pack h eaded into the first turn it was Stork taking his Yamaha support YZ into first with Tom Peters. Mike Friend. Elmer and Dave Molder in tow. Stork pulled a comfortable margin in the first few laps while Fri end and Elmer set up a fierce duel for second, with Molder and Peters doing the same back in fourth a nd fifth . Elmer took six laps before finall y shooting past Friend in a section of whoops , but by that time Stork had the moto under control and went in for the win ahead of Elmer. Friend, Molder and Peters. Elmer roosted out of the gate of th e second moto with the holeshot, with Friend. Molder, Stork an d Peters shuffling for position behind. By the second lap, Stork was working on Friend. when in a section of muddy stadium peaks, Stork tried to fly over Friend, and the Honda rider's retalliarion was a handful of throttle that threw him sideways into a section of mire on the course. where he was buried clear up to his hubs. Stork motored off into third while Friend dug himself out in time to stay in the top 10. On the next lap Stork slipped past Molder for second. and set out after Elmer. but the effort was futile. as the Kawasaki completely dominated the race. Friend began his own charge back from 10th, and with only a few laps remaining, he reeled in the battle for fourth between Peters and Bill Matthews. Friend wasted no time in displacing both of these riders, but Molder was too far away in third. and time ran out with the finishing order Elmer. Stork. Molder, Friend. Peters and Matthews. Brown returns-in triumph to Austin MX By Pat McClure AUSTIN, TX. MAY 23 It was an overcast day as the third and final round of the Best All Around Series got underway at Austin Motosport Raceway today. Texas Experts beware ! Roger Brown is back on th e local racing scene after having been out of action a full year due to a knee injury. Riding a stripped down Can-Am enduro bike for his old alma mater, Perrin Cycles of San Antonio, he captured a pair of firsts after a very hard fought battle with Daniel Conway in the second moto. At the start of moto one. Roger powered his 400 Qualifier off the line to take an early lead. followed by the likes of Ricky Glaser. Willie Phee and Larry Hughes on a
