Baylands Raceway is the new name for the former Fremont Raceway with lots of new additions that include a three-eighths-mile oval com plete with banking and a tri ck grandstand that reportedly holds upward of $8.000. Under guidance of tra ck boss Terry Kniss , it is getting in line for upcoming pro events and maybe even a Winston Pro Series National TT on a track that has yet to be built. Indoor short track and stadiurn motocross have been added, a nd to dra w ou t th e deser t racers, the club hosted this scra m bles event. The trac k was two m iles long and utilized the club's two different mo tocross tracks. Each class ra n for one hour, so endurance was an important factor. Desert ace Bob Nancolas (Yam) won the I25cc Expert class, just ahead of Tom Fitzgerald (Yam) and Marty Jamison (Suz), The best racing of the da y was undoubtedly in th e 250cc classes. Ed Phillips led the 250cc Beginners for about 30 m inutes, but his old Yamaha YZ250E was bea ting him to death. and he fin all y faded to fourth , with Loyal Gibbens (Yam) taking a hardearned win. The 250cc Expert race pitted desert racer Ron Dillon (Yam) against Curt Dice on his new Maico. From the star t, the two got int o the best race of the da y, a knock-down, drag-out affair which kept both rid ers only 20 feet apart for 50 minutes. Finally, Dillon's YZ sp it a chain, ending the hot, dusty duel. The desert ra cers gained revenge when Darren Obendorf (Yam) smoked the Open Beginner class , but motocrossers dominated the Open Expert div ision. George Collingham (Yam) has been getting horrendously fast lately, and he streaked int o a commanding lead in Open Expert. It didn 't last though, as the gearbox locked up, putting him out. Dan Lees (H a n) inherited the lead, and he held on to win over Steve Henry (Han ) and Ron Dillon (Yam) . The concluding trophy presentation was brightened by over $600 worth of contingencies, donated by local dealers, and a special thanks is sent to the Alter, McCray and Hall families for their help and support. • Results SPTSMN: 1.
