Sweet triumphs again at Ross Dow ns ST By Bob Bagwell COLLEYVILLE, TX, MAY 22 Hard charging Sammy Sweet from Houston swept the entire field tonight, winning all the money in 250cc Expert and the 750cc Expert main events. Don Hamilton and Greg Duvall kept the pressure on all the way in the 250s. After 10 laps you could still cover them all with one blanket. The 750cc main was the same thing with Hamilton passing Sweet several times and Shon Stovall sitting in third just waiting for a mistake. It never came; Sweet pulled away on the last lap and held 'em off. This is Sammy's second year on the 750cc bikes , and his experience is starting to show. They say things get better with age; well Sammy and his Bob Bagwell-sponsored Triumph are the same, both 1964 models. Jimmy Thompson and Willie McCoy had at it again as they do every week in the 125s. These two riders are always a crowd-pleaser. Thompson seems to always have a little more power to win, but McCoy is charging hard. The 250cc Amateur main loo ked like a National cham pio nsh ip. For a new rid er to co me to Ross Downs an d see th e race between J im m y T arlton , T u bby Dotson and J ohn Galdwell , he wo uld th ink , " Wow, th ese are Ama teurs?" Coors (known in these parts as Oklahoma "cool-aid") was sponsoring a shootout that turned into a .spaghetti western. In the land of big belt buckles and tight jeans, Joe Burke, Trey jorski. Randy Kirschbaum and some other fellers on scooters made in Japan are supposed to win the shootouts.-Bu t on a track that started out like tomato sauce, a couple of tough riding strangers on Italian mounts just about smoked out the good aI' boysl Gary Dircks and Carlos Serrano saddled up with the new Villas and came away with fists full of dollars. Just like in any good western, things didn't seem to be going right for the underdog. But after Joe Burke (Suz) ducked disaster with some real downhome riding in the I25cc Expert class and escaped the pressing Gary Dircks, the home folks weren 't even looking for the sherrie. Then Joe zipped out to a first moto win in 250cc Expert while Dircks got a noodle in his main jet. After that, it was classic Clint Eastwood. Carlos Serrano wired the Open class but only after coming back from a charge by Randy Kirschbaum on a four-stroke donkey. After that, it was spaghetti and meatballs. Team Villa ate 'em up like a big pizza pie. Serrano and Dircks swept the rest of the menu. • Results 125 EX: 1. Gary Dircka (Viii; 2. Joe Burke (SUl) ; 3. Clay Hoenshell (Yam). 125 A M : 1.
