Gregson, Ron Sun speedy at Washougal MX By Brian Barnes WASHOUGAL, WA , MAY 16 Another perfect racing day greeted the 279 riders who showed up today for Washougal's second race of this year's campaign. Wall y Bromsale had the Wash ougal layout in near perfect co nd itio n when th e firs t moto of I25cc Pro spe d off the line. R on Sun grabbed th e early holeshot with Vancouver Yamaha rider Jim R. Anderson, Cycl e World Honda's Arne Heuman, Mik e McCormick (Fred 's Cycle City ) and Suzuki-mounted Larry H ofen br edl givi ng chase. Sun wo u ld go o n to win the rno to wi th some room 10 spare, but the next fo ur spots sa w riders giving a ll they had to gain a to p five placing. H eu man a nd McCo rm ick staged a good battle fo r the second and third spots u ntil the H onda rider went do wn . T ha t left G regso n a nd DG / Kawasaki su p port's T im Mi chl itsch, who had been steadily mo ving th rough the field from a m id-pack stan, in th ird a n d founh behind McCorm ick a nd Sun. H euman restarted 10 run fifth with R W Racing's Ro b Wat ilo a nd J ohn Woodley on a Suzu ki di cin g for six th an d seventh. By th e one lap flag, Sun wa s long gone to th e moto win . Greg son 's great charge past 10 riders left him in seco nd place, McCormick wa s th ird with Mi chlitsch, Heuman a nd Woodley founh through sixth. " H o lesho t" H euman took th e second moto lead with Gregson, MichIitsch, Suzuki-mounted Mitch Lorenz a nd Sun follow ing him around. After a n o the r slig h t bobble by H euman , Gregson was in th e lead , and Sun was rea lly charging in seco n d. At th e mid-point Sun regained th e lead a nd loo ked like a sure bet to repeat as a wi n ner. Gregson had other ideas, th ough , trying on numerous times 10 pass Su n for five laps. But o n th e la st stre tch , Gregson made a daring midair pas s, th en rounded th e final turn a head of Su n in th e number o ne slo t, taking th e ove rall and the m ot o win away from Sun. Michlitsch ra n in th ird from sta n to fin ish . Watilo was founh and Heuman fifth . The first 250cc Pro m ot o looked like an Am erican flag for over half th e race . That came abo ut because Sun, H euman a nd Steve Smith, all on board suppo rt H ondas, wcrerunning fi rs t through third. Behind them Mi chlitsch a nd J eff Croppr (O ' Neall Gresham Su zuki ) were staging a grea t battle for th e fourth spot. Su n a nd H euman were not 10 be touch ed th e rest of th e moto, co llecti n g first a nd second. Mi chlitsch took third, Cropper fourth, Kawasaki su p po rt's Kevin J ansen fifth a nd Smith sixth . Egli, Hansen, Davis demolish Clarks Branch Saturday MX By Clay Light ROSEBURG, OR, MAY 15 Superb racing conditions today consisting of soft, loamy silt and southern Oregon sunshine made for a super Saturday of racing to kick off Clarks Branch Saturday races, which will run thoughout the summer. In 125cc Pro action , due 10 a small field of riders in th e class, the Open Pro riders were combined to make things more interesting making for a field of seven . First out of the gate was Open Pro Gary Bault (Ya m of Roseburg) followed by 125cc riders Kent Egli ( Ka l-G a rd Suz ), Clay Light (L O P / Bosch/ Su pe r Seer/Yam) and Ri ck Smith (Yam of Roseburg). Following closely behind were Dana Hansen , who is an Expert flat tracker, and A class rider Kyle Buckner (Yam of Redmond), who is the rider who demolished the Mini class. Bault yielded to Egli , who fought off Buckner , who got around H a nsen , then Light and Smith 10 move into contention with Egli, who seemed a bit surprised at the first time A rider (Buckner). Egli took the win while Smith took a second a n d Light a third at th e flag. Moto two it was Egli again launching off the line and jetting away with the moto. Buckner pressured but DNF, gi ving Egli a n easy win and a I-I overall payoff over Smith (2-2) and L ight (3-3). The 250cc Pro class was the most exci ting of all th e classes. The fir st m oto had Rod Huffman (H u ffman Wright Logging Suz) come out of the gate with th e correct throttle position with Rodney Kell er .(KT M USA), Roy Davis (Whee lsmi th / Da vis Cycle! Mai ) giving chase. At th e en d ofa lap it was Huffman pou nd in g th e pack wi th Dav is moving into seco nd with a pass th rough the twi sty woods section a nd Keller holding off Loch Names (Eugene Suz ) for th ird. Davis had put quite a n effo rt in his charge and wasn 't going to settle for seco n d. Davis ca u g h t up 10 and just as quickl y p assed Huffman to lake the lead a nd th e moto win with Huffman dropping off the pace to hold Kell er at bay. Second time out saw a new leader. Names nailed down th e scratch perfectly and led until the fourth lap when H uffman took o ver. Huffman fell prey once a ga in to Dav is at the half, and that's a ll Davis n eeded to lake hi s I-I finishes to the pay window for h is share of th e 200% payba ck . Anderson dominates PI R night MX By Brian Barnes PORTLAND,OR,MAYI3 The sixth race of this year's high point night MX series at Portland International Racewa y found a new face in the Pro winner 's ci rcle. J im Anderso n (MX Fox/Dallas Bak er Products/ ATK/Yamaha support), i n his first appearance a t PIR thi s year, made the most of hi s trek from Longview , WA , to win both 125 a nd 250cc Pro rnotos in a very co n vincin g manner. Suzuki rider Bob Pl ympton took Open Pro, riding with the 250s 10 uncontested wins. In th e first 125cc Pro go 'ro und , Anderson led from start 10 finish , being trailed on the hol eshot by Suzuki-mounted Jess Dirks, Yamaha support rider Denny Fennel and Cycle Wo rld Honda 's Arne Heuman. DG Kawasaki rider Tim Michlitsch, who had won th e last si x rnotos of 125, had 10 pull off after mechan ical woes prevented him from trying to keep hi s string al ive. Adnerson won the moto going away with Fennel second, Hett. man third, Suzuki rider Mike Chase fourth and Dirks fifth.
