But, headway we are making. I hope I have cleared up some of your concern, Mr . Danielsen. I'm sorry you didn't care for UEA's enduro. Godspeed, Fayne Van Zant I am writing you to inform you of a very sad da y in northern California motocross circles. On May 8, 1982, Fayne Van lam passed away at age 50. It seems impossible that this man who had a heart as big as all outdoors could go to sleep and never wake up from a heart attack. His sons, Randy and Rickey , raced in the Amateur classes around Sacramemo and northern California from the mid '70s to early '80s. Even after the boys decided to give up racing, he was a permanent figure at all the races he could attend, his last being Sunday , May 2 in Marysville, CA. He was always rooting the riders on. Darrell Shultz or Danny " Magoo " Chandler, I'm sure, can attest to this. H is favorite expression to my son and many other up-and-coming riders was "Let's get the holeshot 0 kie style," referring to his original birth place. Anyone who has been around the northern California motocross scene will miss seeing him and bei ng touched by such a wonderful person. Fayne has gone to "The Big Motocross in the Sky." We offer our co ndolences to his wife Alberta and the rest of his family. Goodbye to our personal friend, "The Dutch Okie." BO B RUNYON Sacramento, CA Meet the Duck at Cherry Creek Next week the P hant om Duck will be off to Delta, UT, to act as official starter for th e May ~O Cherry Creek Hare ' n Hound being held this year as a fund raiser for the Pha nt o m Duck's legal battle against the BL M. It looks like a good time will be provided for all as the Sugarloafers M.C. puts on a Saturday Mini race, a three-wheeler race, Saturday evening movies, p ius the big three-loop, mountain, desert, sand hare ' n hound race on Sunda y. There are cash awards to be given out as well as a variety of merchand ise contingency prizes that include a Kawasaki KDXI75 motorcycle to be given away that weeke nd, so come on out and enjoy a good race, take a chance on winning th e prizes, and support the Phant o m Duck's efforts at the same time. I will be at Cherry Creek on both Saturday a nd Sunday, and I ho pe to visit with many of myoid friends as well as make new ones, so be sure to sto p by for a visit. LOUIS McKEY Pha ntom Duck of the Desert Fontana, CA 0-37 fights for land I would like to respond to the letter by Frank M. Danielsen in th e Ma y 19, 1982 issue. He was complaining about the Tuff·E-Nuff enduro and AMA. My concern is the po rtion of the letter dealin g with expanding th e riding a reas. It is true tha t there is a commercial venture putting on endu ros. But are they fighting for the desert they p ut their events on? The a nswer is no. T he re is one group that is. It is Distr ict S? and AMA. Weare the only motorcycle organiza tion taki ng on the BLM and the Ca lifornia Desert Plan . Not even the Duck is involved in the Desert Pl an suit. It is ourintentio n to ge t as m uch open desert as possible for all riders. T he lega l costs have been h igh . Th is is why we must ask our riders to hel p. Presiding J udge Tashima sta ted in one opinion tha t we wo ul d proba bly prevail at trial. What have we gained? We now have a legal Check Chase. The Four Aces Moose R un was in an a rea not Facts on an MX Expert I am writing regarding three events that need correction. The first is the (Sea ttle) Kingdorne, where my son, Scott, won second place in the 250cc B class and someone else's name was given as the second place winner. I let this go by as I didn't think it was that importan t. H owever , the next two articles that were incorrectly written really have me steamed. They are the first two races of the Yamaha Gold Cup . T he first race at Jolly Rodgers, Sco tt took two first places in the 250cc Expert class. Nothing was written about this . The second Gold Cup race at SIR was the last straw for me. Scott took three first places in the 250cc Expert class , and again nothing was mentioned. According to Clay Light there wasn 't even a 250cc Expert class in the race. In the May 12 issue, he said there were three riders that did th e triple deed for their classes. Well , [here were four, as Scott did the tri pIe deed for his class. 250cc Expert was not even mentioned in the results. I am sure th is was a disappointment for all the riders in this class , as it was a super race as usual. These kids work hard to get to the top, and I think they should get the recognition for their efforts. Scott won first place at Washougal last month, and is prese ntly the n umber two rider in Washington State. I think he has earned some recognition in you r paper. As you can tell , I am a pro ud mother of a fine mo tocross racer, and all I ask is that the facts a re wri tten as they hap pen. PATZERR Kent, WA Reporter L ight, like others, obtains the names for resu lts from sign up and/ or results shuts furnished by promoters. He can only send what is given to him.
