MAY 8 Following the successful promotion of three indoor short track races at a horse arena in Ca ldwell, the O wyh ee Motor- 30 cycle Clu b. in cahoots wi th the Ca ldwell Rodeo Boar d . staged an even more ambitious event : Idaho's first stadium supercross. The event drew 168salivating riders and an estimated 2,500 fans to the Little Britches Rodeo Crounds in agrarian-minded Caldwell. And, with a $2,500 Expert purse and genuine "stadium jumps," both racers and watchers got their money's worth I The track was constructed by Kelly Fulfer (w ho also rode it ) with heavy equipment courtesy of Mr. Don Amidon. Unlike "big time" stadium events. no dirt had to be trucked in it was already there. Actually, the track surface was composed of sand and sawdust. It worked well and made for nice soft landings whilst crashing. Randy Lee provided amusement for the large crowd by failing to clear the second hump of a double-jump during practice. Lee's bike came to him as a result of his winning a raffled-off C R80 at the Boise Regiona l TT. The winning ticket was selected by his younger sister Michelle. Hmmm . Any how ... Randy, who weighs approxima tely 480 lbs., must have decided h e needed something larger than a mini to pack his ...uh , well developed , frame around a track. CR480s don 't lack for beans. A big-bore Honda proved 10 be the ticket for Dan Lees who engaged in a furious dice with Mark Olberding and Warren "Pud" Hickman (Ya m ) in the Open Expert event. Lees held off Olberding to win th e seven- la p final after Hi ckman stepped off momentaril y to inspect the track conditions. In the 250cc Expert ra ce, Hickman h ad things more to his liking as he blasted his wa y to the front following Chip Young's (Kaw) holeshot. Derrick Personette (Ka w) carved his way through the pack to wind up second. Mark Olberding (Suz) was right up there, 100. That is, unti l he apparent ly decided tha t catch-up also meant going for the $25 prize offered by L&L Shirts for most distance off the H onda High Jump in front of the stands. Honda of Caldwell offered another 25 bucks for highest jump (won by Dan Lees), and High Country Suzuki pu t up yet another $25 for most stylish (Tom Fitzgera ld) . Bu t O lberding got most fol ks' vote with his effort . Mark flew an easy 50 feet through the air, landed on th e front wheel and was going so fast he had no hope of making the corner. Olberding had to use the track exit just to save his ars . Now , if he'd on ly tak en his hands o ff the bars ... Derrick Personette (rid ing a borrowed Yamaha owned by Intermediate Clint Webb) fought hard to get by holeshot king T om Fitzgerald (Yam ) in th e one-tw a-five race. If races were all one lap , Fitzgerald mi ght well be World Ch ampi on . But th ey're n ot , and Personeue pi cked up the lead a t mid-point with a sensa tional in-the-air pass over the Honda High Jump. I'll bet yo u co u ld hear th e noise of the cro wd 30 miles awa y in Boise when that happened. One of the best races o f th e night wa s in the Mini B ranks . Jerry Thompson (Ha n ) gr abbed th e lead and was fighting to ho ld off Nevada' s Chris Strong (Yam ). Brian Hale (Ka w) was quagmired back in the pack until fortune smiled by eliminating three or four guys in a pile-up that H ale rode around. Jon Calhoun (Yam ), all the wa y from Cov e. OR, looked lik e the m an to beat as he passed rider a fter rid er in pursuit of Thompson a nd Strong up front . Calhoun passed 'em a ll to pull even with Thompson going down the front straight. Th e two rac ers zapped a hapless Kawasaki pilot over larry Ward leads Todd Hoover (0 97) and Steve Oster at Woodland. th e High Jump. one on eac h side! WA, MAY 8 Woodland was the site of this week's fourth stop on the Yamaha Perp etua l Gold Cup tour of the Pacific Northwest, and Am ateurs from all over the ar ea showed up 10 compete for series points and so me very ni ce trophies. With Pros an d Amateurs both running the sam e day, it m ade for som e interesting racing aft er the tra ck started to get rough . Yamaha-mounted Todd Hoover ended up the only double winner of the day. taking both th e 80 and 125cc Expert classes. Denn y Fenn ell , an o ther Yamaha ace, took 100cc Expert but co u ld not seem 10 find a way to beat Hoover in th e 125cc cla ss. World Min i Race of Ch ampions winner Lowell Thompson. Jr. blitzed the Pee Wee Expert class and showed everyone in attendance that his title is well deserved. Kyle Fast. yet another Yamaha rider, grabbed 250cc Expert hands down . winning both motos going away. The Open Expert winner was Hondamounted Mark Envolson. The first Mini Expert moto was taken by " Storrnin ' Steve" Oster on his Suzuki. Oster led off the scratch with Todd Hoover, Scott Crimm and SCOll Meyers , all on Yarnahas, falling in behi nd. Oster was not to be denied th e win. leading the entire race 'start to fin ish . with H o o ver , Meyers, Crimm and Yamaha rider Tommv Judge finishing two through five. . The second mota had familia r faces rou nding turn o ne, with Ka wasak i's La rry Ward, who experienced proble m s in the first m or o, lead in g , Hoover, Os ter and Crimm following right behi nd . Wa rd managed to hol d off Hoover for all bu t one la p wh ich happened to be the most important last on e. Oster took his Suzuki to a third with Lowell Thompson, Jr. co m in g from way behind for the number four spot. Jami e Munson gr abbed fifth . The I25cc Expert m oto was loaded with a large majority of the area 's premier up-and-coming riders on the line, 24 10 be exac t. Dennis Dolquist on a Yamaha j u m ped 10 the lead of the first mota with Fennell . Honda rider Brian Leonard. Troy Janssen a nd Bill y Willand. both on Yamahas, trailing. Fennell got the lead and managed to hold on to it until Hoover flew past at th e mid-wa y mark. Hoover an d Fennell took th e first and second sp o ts with Marshall Favre, on a Suzuki, third. Leonard was right behind th em in fourth. a nd Janssen scored a fifth . In th e seco nd moto, two Hondas ro cketed o ff the line together, with David Froembling and Mik e Hauskins aboard. Troy J anssen , H oover. Wade J a nssen a n d Mike Allen, all on Yam ahas, followed closely. By the third la p. however. Hoover had again moved into th e lead with Froembling hot on hi s tail in second. J eff Chapman, on a Kawasaki, an d Fennell had both gott en bad starts but with one lap to go were now in contention.
