American Honda's own Chuck Sun scored top honors in the Open Pro class, posting a 3-1 day . After riding from a dead last start and some mi nor bike problems in the first rnoto, Sun came back to win the second convincingly by half a la p and showed he is more than ready for next week's opening 500cc National round. The track was in premium shape after a slight rain shower in practice and Jim Blasdell's tireless weeklong efforts. Spokane Suzuki/M .P. Products rider Bret Trernblav rocketed into the first 250cc Pro moto lead on the holeshot with Suzuki Northwest's Bruce Irwin, DG /Yamaha support's Stacy Thornton, MX Fox/Portland Honda support rider Ron Sun and Jimmy Anderson close behind. Tremblay led th e first three laps with Sun and And erson moving up quickly to second and third. By the time the pack was passing by the tower for the fourth lap, Sun and Anderson had gained the first and second slots. Tremblay wa s now running third with Thornton fourth. Kawasaki support rider Kevin Jansen had moved up from a mid-pack start to contention in fifth place. Maico rider Roy Davi s was sixth, and Spokane Honda's Robert Bass not far behind in seventh. The duel th e whole race long belonged to Sun a nd Anderson. Anderso n tried pass after pass, but Sun refused to give up the first spot to the Northwest Yamaha ace, somehow finding the beuer lines lap after lap. By the time the white flag came out, the lead still hadn 't changed, with the yo u n ger Sun and Anderson leading the rest of the pack by a healthy margin. With less than two turns to go, both riders collided in a long sweeper and went down . The spectato rs were stunned, wondering what happened. But Sun got his Honda up and running in enough time to hold off Anderson, who wasn 't far behind, for the win. Third went to Thornton with Tremblay fourth and Jansen a , well deserved fifth . The second moto lined up, but Ro n Sun had suffered unrepairable damage to his bike and had to watch from the side lines. Ba ss grabbed another holeshot as they rounded the first turn with Buyas, Tyler , Anderso n and T hornton ro unding out the to p five. Anderson took over, wi th Tyler clo se beh ind on the th ird lap a n d Bass staying in th ird . Ty ler took the ha rd -fought ba ttle for seco nd, with Bass th ird, Jansen fourth and earning second Racing Product:. overall. Tremblay worked up for a fifth with Roy Davis sixth. The 125cc Pro s were next up with a strong field headed for the first turn and MX Fox/Bel-Ray rider Doug Lange leading. Thornton, Burien Suzuki-mounted Danny Diesso, Anderson and O lym p ic Yamaha 's Don Gores rou nding out the top five. Anderson took over the lead on the first lap and looked strong, winning the mota with relative ease, but some serious racing was occurring in th e next 10 spots. By the ha lfway point Hi-Point/American H o nda ace Robb Manni ng had passed nine riders to move into third place. Lange dropped to fourth place trying to hold o ff Olympic Yamaha's Jack McGill and Ron Sun in fifth and sixth. Anderson coasted to the win with Manning's strong r ide earning him second . Thornton was third, Sun fourth, Lange fifth a nd Seaule Honda's Cory Kla udt sixt h . Enumclaw Suzuki's Lance Richou e holeshot the second mota with Vancouver Yamaha's Jim R. Anderson (th e other one), Gores , Chuck Sun (on Arne Heuman's graciously loaned 125 Honda) and Cory Klaudt in tow . By lap number four, Jimmy Anderson had moved into the lead to sta y and motored away for the win. Tremblay and Manning worked up from mid-pack starts to finish second and third. R icho tte's strong ride netted him a nice fourth. Don Gores was fifth , and Chuck Sun was sixth. The Open Pro s leaped off the line for their first rnoto with Spokane Honda's Ro b Bass in the lead for two laps. Maico West's Scott Tyler, Gresham Suzuki's Rowd y Blasdell and Don Knoblauch were in tow . By lap three Blasdell had gained the lead with Tyler and Bass right behind. As mentioned earlier, former National Champ Chuck Sun was having problems and was still dead last on the fourth lap. Sun finally got his bike sorted out and began his charge to an eventual third place finish , but by tha t time Tyler had gotten by Blasdell and the front two were some 25 seconds ahead of Sun at the checkers. Tyler, who usually takes at least one spill during a moto, rode very smoothly and didn't go down, but his mother was so excited by Scott's outstanding performance that she slipped and fell down a dirt bank and ruined his perfect record. Bellevue Yamaha 's John Christian took fourth , and Cycle Craft Yamaha's Don Knoblauch was fifth. The final rnoto of the long afternoon 's racing saw Blasdell rocket off the start to a beautiful holeshot, First moto winner Tyler took a nasty spill around the first turn and was last until the midpoint. By that time Chuck Sun had taken his 480 Honda to a la rge and untouchable lead, running five to seven seconds faster alap than second place Blasdell. Christian ran third the whole mota and finished in that spot with Tyler somehow managing to remount after his spill for a great fourth . Fifth p lace went to Ren to n Yamaha's C hris Mori tz. The series now moves to eastern Washi ngton and Co lville's motocross track [o r th e fift h race o f the Go ld Cup, a nd wi th raci ng as close as it has been, th e fin a l 10 races should be noth in g less tha n spectacula r.
