You ca n ride TT with anything! There were three Pro classes. Jim Small took the 250cc class with two straight in spite of very determined efforts from Roger Thompson. Roger took second in the fir st round but then un loaded in th e seco nd round, putting him way back and a llowing Curtis Cannon to get second overall. The 500s had a nice li tt le group of chargers. Tommy Walton took home the win with a second a n d a first over Chris Cannon's first and second and Mark Cain emerging third. These youngsters are always a pl easure to watch. Walton was the winner again in the Open Pro class over Buddy Ro binson and Chris Cannon. There weren 't enough of them to make it exci ting, but they a ll did what they had to do . Best race of the even ing? Second ro und of the 500cc Junior. Jim Mi lburn won both of them but Steve Honeycutt and Orlando Lambay had a good o ne going for a while. We won 't forget the tiddler division , th e l25s and th e minis ran together a nd Brian Alsobrook provided good enterta inm ent keeping hi s mini Honda up with and racing with th e 125s of Rex Wessels and Bro ck Suter. Peterson pummels Ascot night Pros By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA , AP R. 28 Well , after just a few weeks into the 1982 season, Todd P eter so n h a s reass ured the spectators, h is spons ors a nd 28 the competition that he has made a successfu l Han na h-type comeback fro m last year 's knee inj ury. Tonigh t at Ascot's Continental Mo torsports motocross Todd won not just one, but two classes by defeating a supercharged pack of 125 and 250cc P ros. Twenty-two was the number of 250cc P ro riders tha t ca me to fig ht for the p urse money. T his mea nt that it was necessary to divide th em in hal£ and have two qua lifiers. " R ich ie R ich " Sands is giving racing under the ligh ts a try , and he gassed h is STR Suzuki to the holeshot in the first qualifier. Pe terso n put the squeeze on the Sand m an in the comer after th e crash wa ll j u mps to take over th e lead. Mi ke Tripes held th ird place the entire time on his P ro Circuit Husky. Jim H olley had an average start wh ich m eant th at h e had to work h is way th ro u gh a lo t of traffic. H olley passed every rider that time allowed h im to and even came within a bike's len g th of Tripes at the finis h line. Micky Dymond, like Sands, is a na me that is common to Sa dd leback racing. Dym o nd showed th a t he knew h o w to slide his Maico around a night style track and led the second q ua lifier of the 250cc Pro class. His lead was brief as Micky ove rshot a sweeper, right past theTTj ump, and we nt orr the track. . Eddie Gauley advanced to firs t, but j ust like in past battles, Gau ley got m uscled o ut by a more experienced rider. Bill O uell ette is o ne o f the Ind ian Du n es boys, and he squeezed Gau ley in a corner p ast the crash wall to ta ke over the lead . Do ug Nicol took h is H o n da to second while T& O Yamaha's Tim Sh elto n was third. Ga ul ey drop ped back to sixth. T h e riders who di dn't qualify fo r th e 250cc P ro final had one last chance in the 250cc consolation race. P rem ier Yamaha 's Glen Senecal had th e co nsy lead till Gary Jones made the pass in the final stre tch for th e win. The 250cc P ro final got orr to a bad start. One rider went down in th e third tum , and the o the rs formed a dog-pile . Sh elton an d Gauley were just two of th e riders involved. G auley later went o rr o ne ofth e cra sh wa ll jumps a n d fell o rr th e wa ll to th e lo wer part of th e track . Avoiding all of th e trouble was T odd Peterson who en ded up with the top ca sh ahead of Sands a nd Tri pes . Peterson bagged th e to p cas h in th e 125cc P ro class, but h is p erformance was not flawless. Er ic Corrin rode his Honda for th e lead in the fir st rnoto. Pet erson battled with Coffin a n d passed h im over one of th e jumps. Shelton rode two cla sses, also, an d he placed th ird while R oost Factory's Frank Pi lato was fo urt h . Coffin screa me d o u t ahead in the final rnoto but went too wide a fter the crash wall section and ac tually went orr the track. He wasn't penalized and continued with the lead. Peterson had a bad start but worked up rapidly. Bo th Eric a nd Todd slid out in th e third corner, a n d this changed th e race. Shelton took over the lead while th e others were trying to regain th eir positions. Peterso n was riding all out, and this caused h im to fall on a ba ck jump. H e sp u n hi s Yamaha around in a 360 degree tu m as Coffin soared by . Todd doesn 't give up easily, and while in th ird , he was gaining yardage on Eric. On the last lap, Todd made a bea u tifu l pass, and he squeezed by Eric in th e fina l tum. A 1-2 tall y still earned Peterso n the first p lace money over Shelton 's 3-1 and .Coffin 's 2-3. With first place well esta blish ed by Peterso n , thi s left th e fight for second between Cra ig Adam s (H o n) and · Randy Norman. At th e fini sh Adams in ched his wa y in front of Norman to tak e seco nd o vera ll. The Am at eurs put o n a n ex citing race as th e leader s were ver y close throughout th e race. T he No vices were in ch es a pa rt a n d Da ve Atkinson sq ueezed out in front with Pa trick Da le and Ed Wambolt. Dave Aldana mad e an impressive rid e in the Vets class as he took the ch eckered at the finish. By the midd le o f th e ra ce Aldana had esta blishe d quite a lead. Jim Berry to ok over the second spot position leavi ng Lynn McG raw (H us) , Scott Hendrickson (Yam ), a nd Bill Man ley to fight for third. They fini shed in th at order. T he Amateurs fini shed wheel to wheel an d ac ross th e finish lin e it wa s Chuck Will ia ms (H o n), Dan Kell y, and Peter Bryk. The Open class made for a n excitin g ra ce as Craig Adams took the ho leshot. It wasn 't easy for Adams to h old orr the threatening co m pe tito rs. Pa u l Huffman (H on ), Rand y Norman, a nd Tracy Wa lters were in ho t pursuit of th e lead. On th e sixt h la p Norman came around in the lead wit h Adams following clos ely behi nd. Tracy Wa lters wa s in third and Lloyd Th omas was in fourth. At th e fin ish it was close but they fin ished in th e same order : Norman, Adams , Wa iter s, and Thomas. Top Amateu rs were Greg New land, Eric Evans, and Dan Ayers. The 80cc class gi ves a race fo r those yo u n g riders who are just starting o u t. Keith Senn has been riding the 80cc class for years and he showed us j us t what o ne of th ese little machines ca n do . Senn made way with th e hol eshot a nd showed impressive style as he widened h is lead with every lap. Senn (Bellflower Yam / Da llas Bak er P rod .) fin ish ed with th e overall wi n , leaving seco nd place to G ene Baldwin who also shows a style of his o wn . Gene Ba ldwin a lso claimed first Amateur points in this ra ce. Dave Trager (Ya m ) finished third overa ll and T y Davis took first Novice points. Fifteen-year-o ld Gordon Ward, Jr. (Kaw) won the 8 1-200cc class after ho lding o rr Brian Myerscough (Hon ) in the begin n ing of the race. After Myerscough dropped ou t in the fifth lap Gordon was lit era lly u nt ouch ed. At th e fini sh it was Ward who took the checkered with Quinton Smith claiming th e second place spot. T hird overa ll was taken by a Chain breaker rider Ro b Mi ller. Top Amateurs were Albert St. George and W. Mike Jewell. Industry types invade Julian By Eric Anderson JULIAN, CA, AP R. 24-25 T he southern Ca lifornia clouds parted, allowing the good old sunshine to beam down in time for a terrific indus try road ride into the wild west village o f Ju lian. Thirty-n ine people from all ends of the motorcycl e industry left Lagu n a H ills on Saturday to wind their wa y up to Lake Elsinore and o n to the cu rving, strea m -fed De Luz Road. After multiple wat er crossings, wet socks were allowed to dry whi le th e group zipped up to scenic Mount Palomar. Some went on to see th e telescope (secon d la rgest in the world ) whil e o th ers rode down th e ba ckside of th e moun tai n to view Mesa G rande, o vergrown in green sp len do r and sp ri n k led with pa stures popula ted with new born ca lves an d co lts. The beautiful scen ery, blue sky a nd winding motorcycle roads co m bined to p rovid e th e perfect ride which many thought was not possible so close to home. Awaiting a t th e Pine Hills Lodge j u st a mile out o f J ulian was a great stea k barbeque and d inner pl ayhouse. Motorcyclist executives on th eir weekend orr from m aking sales or travelli ng to trade shows certai n ly make for a wild audience. The wild west came a live aga in , and th e P ine Hills players loved it . The play, " 6 R oom s R iv Vu" was a h ilario u s comedy abou t a ma n a nd woman cheating on their spouses. Audience participa tio n - whooping and holleri ng, that is - was tremendous and at least as m uch fun as th e play itself. An awards presentation was made after the p lay to prolong the fu n . P r izes included: th e 'W h ips and C hai ns Award ," the "Close Ca ll Award," the " O ld Timer Award ," the " Most Rep resented O EM a nd Aftermarket Awards. " Names of th e wi n ners were changed to protect the innocent, but you know who you are. Country western m usic in the bar to the tu nes of "Crazy Dave" was the last order of the eve ni ng before retir-. ing to small cabins nestled in th e pin e woods around the lodge. Groups split up o n Su nday to have breakfast and explore Julian , then find th eir own way h o me.
