Hames claims CMCAscofTT opener By Maureen Lee GARDENA. CA. APR. 15 The Continental Motosports Club started their weekly program of TT scrambles using most of the famous Ascot course tonight. The best group of the evening to watch were th e 500 Pros. Everyone rides two motos, a nd bus y were th e guys who found themselves in back to back races. First round, it was Dave Bradl ey. Rob " Five Flavors" Pfetzing, Chris Cannon a nd Ro ss Klatt all out th e chute a nd down into the esses first. Pfetz in g was outgunned a bit and fell back and the fight was on between Ross Klatt and Chris Cannon. Then came Gene Manhire, La rry Erhardt a nd P fetzin~. Round and round they storm ed. With Chris hanging onto th e lead over J eff Johnson who had moved on up to the second spot. Cannon tried, but Jeff got by on th dog leg after the jump and he held the lead as th ey ca me around the halfmile tum for th e finish flag . In their seco nd round it was Fran Brown down into tum one first but J eff Johnson had it coming out and looked like he really had everythi ng dialed in. H e just proceeded to pull away from the gang. Behing him was wh ere the action was. The rider from New York , Fran Brown , looked a bso lutely super out th ere, he had seco nd for the rest of th e race. Gene Manhire had th ird with Chris Cannon doing everything he could to take it away. Finally Chris saw a chance to go inside into turn one and took it. Johnson celebrated his win with a wheelie across th e finish line. The Vets and Old Timers had their go. It ended up a fight between Bill Fulton and Ed Crippe for the win with Bill taking first overall a nd Ed second, but as the y were scored separa tely they both went home with firsts . Dennis Pinheiro certa inly ga ve Ful ton some th ings to th ink about. he pushed William hard th e whole second round. Woody Lindsey was th e bilt winner in the 500cc Juniors. He took 'em bo th with Bill Fulton second in the firs t one and Mark Bailey in the second round. L indsey had a good lead, but never backed off. Pete Hames tore up the Open Pros, . taking home the most money. First round started Hames, Bud Carroll and Fran Brown up front. After a bit. Brown got by Carroll in the esses and was hard after Hames. Jimmy Rosa unloaded in tum one, and Larry Earhart dropped it in the tight turns. Hames just charged on with the win. followed by Brown, Carroll and Danny Perkins. The second race was the best of the evening. This time it was Jimmy Rosa and his Maico out front; Fran Brown tried it all around the outside and only succeeded in going off the course while the rest of the crew streamed by. Rosa dug in his heels and off he went. then came Hames. Bud Carroll and Brown. Fin all y, it became a foursome a nd Pete Hames took over fir st going down the front straight, then came Rosa. Carroll and Brown . One super good race, guysl In the 250cc Pro first round, Roger Thompson absolutely shot for th e firs t tum and got there firs t. J ay Lewis was right on his tai l push ing hard, and coming up fast. passing two riders in the esses, was Dal e Lawrence. Thompson tr ied to hold off Lewis. but no go . J ay sa w hi s real cha nce. after several exploratory ones. and dove through, on th e inside of the esses, and out fron t as they approach ed the j u m p. Thomson didn 't give up. but on the white flag lap he lost second pl ace to Gene Manhire. Second round. Lewis go t the drop on th em . but Roger steamed by. Peterson, Dymond, Zifferkopl repeat at OC'R By Steven Crosby IRVIN E, CA, APR. 15 For the second time in a two week old season th e na mes on to p of th e Pro payout shee t read th e sa me. In 125cc ac tio n. Todd Peterson eme rged th e victor by tradin g first a nd second p lace finishes wi th Suzuki-mo unted Harley Hall. Peterson 's 2-1 tally gave him the nod over Hall 's 1-2 posting. In O pen Pro, Greg Zitterkopf rode to a n easy pair of fir sts after going over the handlebars in 250cc acti o n. T he o ther repeat winner was Micky Dymond on his Wh eelsmith Maico in 250cc Pro. In th e first 250cc Pro mota it was a newcomer to the Pro ra nks, J eff Brod ie, with the holeshot. Hi s lead was sho rtli ved as Dymond p ut his Ma ico on top on the first la p. John Greenway was third with G reg Zitt erkopf fourth . Dymond began to pull a way while Brodie was ho lding on to second and holding everybody else orr. Just past the finish line, after th e second lap, Zitterkopf tried to get a line on Greenway. but spun-out. Andy Guth moved his Honda up to fourth. The order stood that way for a few laps with massive dicing, but no passing going on among the second through fifth place riders. Finally. Greenway found a weakness in Brodie's effort and took second on the sixth la . Greenway tried to close up some of Dymond's big lead, but ran out of tim e. Mean wh ile, Zitterkopf ca ug ht Guth na pping j ust a bit avera j u mp and left the gas o n to sli p by into fo urth. On the last lap Ziuerkopf wanted to pass Brodie in the stutterbumps, but took th e fir st one too ha rd . He went cartw hee ling over his handlebars. T ha t kn ock ed him out of the race. bu t he wasn 't inj ur ed, so he shoo k it off and went on to win Open Pro. In the seco nd moto Micky Dymond too k th e holeshot and was gone. He quickl y built up a lar ge lead and kept the crowd enterta ined with so me fan cy riding through th e turns a nd over th e j umps . Jim Brod ie had his Ceetback ed H onda in sec o n d aga i n. Greenway put th e pr essure on Brodi e a nd Zitterkopf was back a nd puttin g th e pressure o n Greenway. Brodie held them off for six laps, until he fell tryi ng to cut a co rne r too tight and had to settle for fourth. Greenway clinched second overall, while Brod ie took home third pl ace mon ey. Some of th e quickest lap tim es of the n ight were bein g turned in by th e Mini Intermedia tes. T he gro undwater from all the rains kept the track moist an d firm and th e q uickest riders were ru n n in g ri ght a t o ne m inute-15 secon ds a lap. In the fir st Inter medi ate rn oto , G lenn Tucker pu t hi s Kawasaki into th e ea rly lead . On the second lap , a fast rider fro m do wn und er, Brian Carro ll. put his 1000c ride up front. T ucker ran into pro blems on the next lap a nd fell back. Tommy Com bs inheri ted secon d for a short tim e un til J ared Smith caught him in the stutterbumps. Smi th was consis tently pu tting hi s Yamaha into the fastest lin e in th e stu tterbu mps a nd used it each lap to pi ck off rid ers until he had th e lead. By the secon d rn o to everyo ne else had learned his tric k a nd the going got rough er. The Aussie, Carro ll, took th e lead from th e firs t turn and never look ed back. Dave Kirkpatrick was second overa ll and first a mo ng th e 80s. Kirkpatrick held off Smith th e ent ire moto, but Smi th 's 1-2 tall y was good for top hon ors compared to Kirkpatrick's 3-1. In Mini No vice class, Bart Pitts wh o had a rri ved with hi s Yamah a in pieces, ran wild over the compe tition . In the firs t rn oto . he took the holeshot a nd quickl y separa ted him self from the crow d. Kevin Valenti was second for th e first ha lf of the go -ro und. but went do wn a nd did n't fin ish th e rno to. Cra ig Nielsen took over second with young Shane Hunt pressuring him. Hunt, a good 60cc rider, was in his th ird ever 80cc race and kept pace wi th frontrunners the wh o le tim e. By the tim e the moto was over , Hunt fin ished fourth beh ind Darren Noddings. In the second moto, Pitts had to wa it half a lap before taking the lead. Darren Noddings sta yed with him for a few laps, but co u ld n' t get by. Shane Hunt. meanwhile, fought hi s way from fifth place up to third by th e checkered flag. Overall it was Pitts. Noddings with a 3-2 a nd Hunt in third with a 4-3. Results 60 BEG: 1. I I It was a wet and m uddy day, but that didn 't stop th e good turnout of racers th at showed up a t Indian ' Du nes on the Intern at ional cou rse to race with the America n Motocross Enterprizes today. Mud d idn't stop KT M-mount ed Jo hn Fin kelde y as he too k back-toback wins in both the 250 a nd Open Pro races. Round one of the Open Pro race saw Yama ha mounted T im Locey taki ng th e holesh ot a nd th e lead followed by Yama ha support DG ri der Pete Snorteland and Simi Va lley H o n d a -s p on so red A ndy Richard, bu t there was no holdin g bac k the cha rge o r Finkeld ey as he put th e pass on Rich ard a nd went after Sno rte land and Locey. Finkeldey wa s a ble to tak e th e lead , putting Locey in second a nd Sn orteland into the th ird pl ace' spot. Round two aga in saw Locey pulling into the lead wit h Snorteland a nd R ich ard close behi nd, but aga in Finkeldcv W".IS able to tak e over the lead whe'n Locey had to drop o ut of the race due to bike problems . As the flag droped for the finis h of mo to two. it was Finkeldey wit h the win. Snorteland second and Tom Webb third. The overall for the day went to Finkeldey wit h second go ing to Snorteland and third 10 Webb. The 250cc Pro race was a repea t of the O pe n class as Snortela nd and Finkeldey batt led it o ut for the lead in bo th motos. Fin keldey was ab le to capture the win in both rnotos, giving hi m the overall for the da y with Sn ortel and finish ing seco nd a nd Yam ah a -m ounted Ton y Pulli am taking home th e third pl ace honors. In the 125cc Pro class, round one sa w Honda su p port rider St even Schmitz tak e th e fir st mota win with second pl ace being filled by Suzukimounted Pat O 'Donnell and third going to Suzuki of Bakersfieldmounted Gary Bowman. Round two ag ain saw Schmitz taking th e lead with O 'Donnell in second. O 'Donnell was a ble to take over the lead, wh en Schmi tz had 10 drop out of the race due to bik e problems, O 'Donnell was able to take th e second rnoro win and the overall for the da y with Honda rider Mark Butler taking second for th e da y and thi rd place being filled by Bowman.
