TX, APR. 4 The second annual AMA Spring Mo tocross Seri es got underway at Oa k Hill MX P ark with Yamaha -pow er ed Darren 42 Rhoten a n d Greg Fouts sharin g the spotlight in the Expert classes. while Team Green 's Bryan Abernathy and Tiger Foytik of Garland Suzuki were the outsta nding Ama teurs of the meet. Ro ugh a nd ready was the order of the day for the TCR Promotions event. as heavy rains on Friday softened the course, one of the few in Texas offering motocross "au naturel. " There is no need for ma nma de obstacles a t Oak Hi ll, sort o f a love-h a te situation where the track demands respect, and even a littl e fear. but the well-skilled and conditioned riders will end up in the winner's circle. The 125cc Experts provided one of the day's best races, wi th Bryan T aylor a n d a pure rocket Ho nda opening a n ear ly lead in the first rnoto, followed by an angry pack of Yamaha 's ridden by Greg Fouts. Carroll Richard son and Tim Butler. By the halfway point, though , Taylor's lead had diminshed, and R ichardson had pass ed Fouts for second. Announcer Lyn n Nickerson had the crowd on its feet as the leaders formed a tighter a nd tigh ter foursome in the last three laps. With two laps to go, Bu tler zapped Fouts for th ird, and R icha rdson was in Taylor 's roost, lookin g for an opening. On th e la st la p, they dove o ff in to a la rge, deep sand ~s!t; Tayto! g~! 9yt of shape, and the YZ trio came ou t, but no Taylor! Richa rdson held off Butler and Fouts to the finish , a nd Taylor recovered for fourth . The second moto saw Tayloragain grabbing the lead , wit h Fo uts an d Mike Foyti k (Suz) in h is wa ke. Butler started m id-pack, a nd Ri chardson fell off the first lap. They p layed some serious ca tch-up, however, and displaced Foyrik by the halfway mark. With less than two laps left, Taylor got off again in the same section that claimed h im in the first race , making it a Fo uts- Butler dash to the fin ish . T he ch eckers fell for Fo uts and a 3-1 first overall, edging out Butler's 2-2 and R ichardson. third at 1-4. Transplanted Floridian John Kindhart throttled his T eam Green KX to th e 250cc Expert first moto lead, but Darren Rho ten (WR W Yamaha) set a n unbea tab le pace and took over on lap four. By the finish, the field was pretty spread out as Rhoten cruised in followed bv Kindhart, Tim Butler (Yam) . Ho nda of Au stin's Jack Beck-: ham and Mik e Walcott (Ya m). The final was all Rhoten 's, but this time, Butler held on to second, and Kindhart crashed o ut of third on la p five. Rho ten and Bu tler too k the top two overalls back to th e WRW cam p. with Beckham (4-3) third , and Walco tt' s 5-5 good for fourth. Rhoten had Open Expert in the bag. too, until th e last lap of the last rnoto, wh en he had an unexpected fuel shortage 100 yards short of the finish . Second-running G len Goodier drove his su p po rt Honda by Rhoten's dr y Yamaha for a 2-1 victory o ver Rhoten . who pushed in for second at 1-4.Jon Kolbensvik brought the Dallas Maico in for third at 5-3. whi le David MacLaskey (Ho n, 7-2) was fou rt h . Skipper Beavers (Suz) and Kyle Lewis (H on ) highlighted an excel lent 250cc Intermedia te race after tak ing over from Ra ndy Squier, who flipped his Honda whi le leadin g on the fifth la p. Bea vers a nd Lewis were wh eel to wheel a t th e whi te flag , but Beavers got h ung m.olIll;n lflrih ~il h ~ . '. .
