Tony Mathews (Yam ). While Bros.-sponsored event was held on the challenging AMA National course used the previous weekend for th e 125/250cc championship title chase. Mild weather, excellent traction and rider enthusiasm made for a fine da y of racing. Kawasaki factory star Goat Breker topped the overflowing 250cc Pro race despite strong cornpetirion from Honda suppon rider Jim Tarantino. Tarantino gated well in the first rnoto an d pulled 10 the earl y lead as Breker worked through the field after a mediocre start. Near the halfway point, Breker closed on Tarantino an d found an opening near rnoto's end 10 lake the checkers first. Montoyaspons ored Suzuki rider Robert Reisi nger crossed th e fin ish line n ext wh ile Cra ig Dal e kept h is Suzuki ahead of th e Honda of John Spaw to finis h fourth. Taran tin o was again the first rider to sai l off Banzai H ill as th e seco nd race gOI underwa y. . Breker quickl y moved into seco nd a n d pressured for two laps before moving into th e front position. T arantino hung right a n d wailed for Brek er 10 make a mi stak e. Breker kept h is cool, however, and T arant ino had to se u le for rh e runner-up SIOI. Reisinger bailed on lap lWO and h ad to charge from last place 10 finish sixth for th e moto a nd pick up fourth pl ace overall money behind Spaw . Dal e rounded o u t th e top five after an excell ent ride for th e usual 125cc clas s co m petitor. Richard Sands claimed six th pl ace on a Yamaha. T hough it was an enjoyable day for most - especiall y the class winners - Kevin Case suffered a serious leg injury and will be out of action for quite a while. SRA workers wish rhe "Desert Ace" a speedy recovery. The first race of the day was the 80cc class. Amateur Gene Baldwin (Ya m) , sp o nsored by Dallas Baker Products, look home th e overall win. On th e first lap, Curtis Canner cam e around in the lead on th e founh lap and held it 10 th e end of the 13-lap race. G en e was followed by top Nov ices G ary Lac y (Ya m), Bill Crawford and Shawn Burrell. Top Beginners were Ron Jordon (Ya m) , Mik e Williams (Kaw) and Carl Gibson (Kaw). Br ian Manl ey (M D Exca va tin g Yam ) got th e ho leshot over Quinton Smith (Suz West ) in the 200cc race . As Brian widened h is lead, it was a game of sw itch-a-roo for sec o n d place. By the sixth lap , Rob Hall (Su z) had established his second place position, leaving a fight for third between Rob Miller and Wayn e Jewell (Suz), Across the finish it wa s 16-year-old Manley. Second p lace went 10 Hall and third overall (first Amateur) was Jewell. Shanon Shamblin made a very impressive ride on his Dale's Modern Cycle-sponsored 80cc Yamaha as he took seventh overall in the 200cc class. The Seniors/Vets class must have been th e most exci ti n g rac e of th e da y as it wa s a n eck-and-neck race 10 the end between Bill Saltzman (H us)and Lynn McG raw (H us). At th e finish, it was Saltzman fin ishing inches in front o f McGraw for first a n d second O p en Expert Vets. In the 250cc ra ce, il was Craig Adams (Ho n) wh o took th e holeshot, H e wa s followed by Mike Baker an d Randy Ha yes (Yam). By the founh lap, Baker had dropped OUI due to stopping 10 help a n injured rid er, leaving seco n d place 10 Hayes. Third spot was taken by Randy Norman. Randy was gaining quickly on the leaders throughout th e ra ce. Norman wa s followed closely by Chris Harrold (Yam) . By th e las I lap Norman had overtaken Adams for the checkered, and at the finish it wa s Norman, Adams ana Harrold. In the Open race, it was Danny Sanchez (Hon ) who made it to the first turn in the lead. Sanchez was followed by Lloyd Thomas (Hon) and Morgan Malocco(Hon).Throughout the race, th e leaders were close an d after Norman had laken lh e lead , m any riders swi lche d places behind h im . J .W. H ansen (Mo nt clai r Yam ), Thomas, Adams , Sanchez and Mik e Bak er were a ll lhrealening Norman for first.
