The Sparkplugs: Nippondenso Mike Melton, the 125cc Intent class w inner, takes on gas -- quick -fill style . Jack Penton nearly upset Melton 's plans in the final test. seconds behind Penton at the finish. Knarr slid out to kill his chances. "One second is as good as 100," said Melton on his class win. "I couldn't judge how fast 1 had to go," said Penton. "I guess 1 didn 't attack the course hard enough." John Martin had a nine point edge on Jeff Fredette as the pair went into their heal. Martin added another len points to that via a winning ride after a banzai pass of early leader Terry Seales. Fredette was all over the track and his bike in an effort to catch up. He finished third behind Sea les. T he race everyone was waiting for came up with Cunningham and Lojak in the same hea t. Cunningham got the holeshot and never relinq uished the lead. Lo jak ba ttled with Kad lec, but couldn't get past, and slid down. twice tryi n g. He finished th ird , six seco nds back. However, the win was in dou bt righ t to th e flag a t the finish . Hyde made a valiant effort to erase a 37.5 point deficit to LaVoie in the Open In ten t class. He wiped off 24 points in winning his heat, but it : wasn't enough. LaVoie was still 13.5 points to the good. "One week ago in Tennessee 1 spent nearly the whole day in the woods waiting for someone to come and haul the bike out, " said LaVoie afterwards.
