pass Tripes and Tripes would pass him back. They did this several times until the fourth lap when Tripes stalled his bike. He restarted and was off in sixth. Tripes passed Carlson for fifth on the sixth lap, then moved up two more places when he went by Picazo and Browne two laps later. Tim Lunde caught Carlson on the sixth lap and then both riders passed Picazo for fifth and sixth. Lunde passed Carlson for fifth and then moved into fourth when Browne slid out and dropped to 10th. Tripes moved back into second on the ninth lap when he was passed by Lunde. In the four remaining laps Tripes cut Finkeldev's IO-second lead in half but the checkered flag came out giving Finkeldey the win and Tripes second. Bob Totten (Suz), Hames collects on three, Johnson takes half mile at Corona By Elaine Jones e- CORONA, CA, MAR. 27 After losing one race date to rain, the troops were more than ready for some oval action tonight at Corona Raceway . Mike Tripes leads a buzzing horde of CMC 125cc Pros at Carlsbad. Greg Zitterkopf had time for a wave while winning Corona·s 260cc Pro 36 third. Hopwood pulled into the pits, out of contention after losing water through a loose hose clamp. Hopwood returned to finish the race, but was two laps down. Sargent passed Herrihew to move into fourth on the ninth lap after a last place start. S.ar: gent moved into third when Murray ' stalled out and dropped to sixth. Sargent was three seconds behind Tetherton with three laps remaining, but he pulled even at the start of the last lap and made a successful pass in the horseshoe for second. Tripes took his second win of the day for the overall. Sargent rode from last place to second and a tie-breaking second overall with Tetherton in third. Herrihew finished fourth and Hans Mueller fifth. In the 250cc Pros Mike Tripes took the holeshot over Jeff Lucas, Woody Carlson, and John Finkeldey. Finkeldey quickly took over second on the first lap when he passed Carlson and Lucas. Finkelday passed Tripes two laps later to move into the lead. Finkeldey came to California from Westbrook, CT, torideCMC's Golden State Series and stayed to ride some of ' the Nationals. Finkeldey rode his KTM to an 18 second win over Tripes, Lucas and Eric Baker, who passed Carlson on the last lap. . In the second mota the track had a lot more traction and a lot more riders staying on. At the end of the first lap it was Tripes out in front ahead of Finkeldey, Lucas, Tom Browne and Joaquin Picazo. Finkeldey would tpf!,) Pete Hames was right on track and started the evening off by topping a lOman field in the 250cc Money shan track. It was a wire-to-wire romp for the "Simi Flash. " Darren Hulbert got offIn second spot, but Roben Land took over on the second lap. Roger Thompson was working his way from fifth, but the going wasn't easy for the Corona youngster, especially since Land and Hulbert were battling for second. Hulbert reclaimed second on the eighth lap of the 15 lap main event. Land came fighting back and took over again on the 10th lap. Thompson got the break he was looking for when Hulbert's bike went south, and he locked up third. They finished in that order. Hames was right back on the line for the Open Money short track. For Hames, it was an instant replay with a wire-to-wire, catch-me-if-you-can ride. Jim Rosa got second off the start and held it for three laps before Jeff Johnson motored his big Harley by as Rosa's bike went sour. Vince Gildner, down from Olympia, WA, moved into third. Rosa was back on the track two laps later, but the bike was till causing him problems, and he ended with a DNF. Hames had his second win with Johnson second and Gildner third. Hames was now two for two, and the 250cc Money half mile was next. Again Hames got the jump on the field and never looked back. Raben Land was off second with Bobby Beer third and Mike-Kirby fourth . Roger Thompson did his usual come-frombehind number and moved from fifth to third in one lap. Mike Kirby was holding on to fourth, looking very strong, when his bike went belly up. At the same time, Thompson put a move on Land and came up with second with five laps to go . Land came back strong, but Thompson held him off to come up with second. Land was third with Darren Hulbert picking up fourth. The Open Money half mile was the only thing left for Hames to make it a clean sweep for the night. Jeff Johnson had di££erent ideas as heblasted off the line to take the lead. Hames was second with Chris Cannon third. These three were to set the pace for the 10 man field. Dan Mullins, who made the trip over from Mesa, AZ, had fourth until the fourth lap when Rex Hailey t ook over. Jim Rosa took ' a im on Mullins one lap later and came up with fifth . Eddie San Roman was on the move and made it on the I Ith lap, dropping Mullins one more spot. Hames was still trying to knock off Johnson, but the Fontana Radiatorsponsored, Tony Denius-tuned Harley rider was not to be denied, and Hames just didn 't have the ponies to catch him. He settled for second with Chris Cannon third. Double wins went to J ason Bell in th e 125 and 250cc Novice short track , while Derrick Van and Darren Hulbert captured the 250cc Amateur and Expen shan track and half miles, respectively, and Tim Gewecke the Mini goes.
