Full mer gra bs CRC Bob cat End uro By Sy lveste r Boga rd RED MOUN TAIN, CA , MAR. 14 Bill Fullm er, Jr. surpri sed all the big bore endur o enthu siasts by powe ring his ITl75 Yama ha to the overa ll victor y at the Califor nia Racing Club's Bobcat Enduro . Two factors made his win even more notewo rthy. The first was finishing the last eight miles on a flat rear tire caused by hitting the railroad track crossin g a little too hot and the second wasthe course itself. CRC course layout Honch o Larry Langle y was dumbf ounded when he learned that a small bore bike had taken the overall win. He though t it was definit ely a "big bike" course. Fullme r may also have been on the receivi ng end of a little luck when the check leading into the "specia l test" on the second loop had to be thrown out because the checke rs' pens became inoper able when a heavy rainsto rm moved into the area to hinder the 600 riders. Most of the riders though t th e min added a " un iq ue " flavor to the enduro , even though most got soaked throug h and throug h . At least there was no dust. Fullme r reporte dlvcam e into th e "check -in" a minute earlv but since the check was reverte d to observ ation status, the early points weren' t counte d agains t him. Second overall and first 250cc A was Rick Daniel who droppe d Just two points in a fine ride. Rick may have been the overall winner if the " ch eck-in had been counte d. DMG Maico rider Grant Palens ke droppe d three points for third overall , edging out Team Mugen 's Bob Bal entine. Balent ine was riding with sponso r AI Baker and Countd own Engine ering's Jerry Counts , who was tutorin g Bob in the fine art of enduro timeke eping. First " B" rider was 250cc pilot Bob Farr in at seventh overall , first 250 B dropp ing just five points . Right behind Farr was anothe r B rider, this time a Vetera n, firema n John Jacobsen (Hus), First C rider was Mark Amend ola, droppi ng five measle y points for II th overall to rate a "who was that guy" remark s from th e compe tition. The C riders won't have Mark to chase anymo re; he was promp tly transfe rred to B rider status by points keeper Art J ensen, who figured that any C rider who finishe d 61 positio ns in front of the next C rider really wasn 't a e. It wasn 't cheatin g - it was reporte dly Amendola's first enduro , probab ly not his last: As the first riders headed out north toward s Charli e's place, the rain clouds were already gather ing but most hoped the rain would hold off until after the event, especia lly the checke rs, but to no avail. Soon after th e first numbe rs started co m ing in off the finish of the 37-mile first loop, the heaven s opened up, makin g riding very interes ting. In the one-lo oper ranks, Shauna Hopkin s (H o n ) had a perfect 0.0 ride to lead all the one-loo p-only riders. Shaun a just edged out Rod Blinzle r (250cc C -16), Mike Beck (125cc C • 16), SCDlt Jacobs en (Mini C) , Sean Keast (Mini C) , and Robert J. Wranosky (Mini A) who all droppe d just one measle y second on their one loop tour. Anothe r notable ride was turned in by Dana Bell who decided to sign up this year in the men's 200 B Veteran class. Dana trophie d again so she earned a transfe r to A ride status. She won't get too many rides .a s an A becaus e she will be forced to take a break to deliver her child. At the other end of the scale is Super- Senior (over SO years) Jesse Goldbe rg (KTM) , all the way from Nevada to compe te. He blew the drawer s off of about 586 other, younge r riders in a fine ride to 14th overall , first Super- Senior. While the course took away points, it was rideabl e for the C riders. The sand hills with all the canyon s, ridges and even a steep sandy downh ill to make things interes ting kept the riders from getting cold in the pourin g rain. After a long reset to get everyo ne back on time, the course eld east out
