PRODUCT EVALUATION Nava racing boots Though Nava is fairly well .kn own for their helmets, not many people realize they als o make plastic boots for motocrossers and other off-road enthusiasts. The Navas resemble plastic ski boots more than any other MX-type boot around. Constructed of black plastic, the Navas feature a rigid bottom that encases the foot and a more flexi ble upper that comes up to about two-thirds the heigh t of your calf. A sort of sock/l iner/bootie slips over your foot before you put the boot on and fas ten it with the two lockin g buckles. Three holes near the inside top of each boot are there to provide ventilation. While the boots are pretty slick loo kin g , we were a bit disappointed in their actual performance. Fi rst of all, ours were way 100 stiff from the start in the ankle area. Despite a hinge ar rangement to provide for ankle movement fore and aft , the boo ts moved very lillie and felt almost like two casts when trying to walk. On a bike, they weren't as bad, but they still lim ited how much you could point your toes forward when throwing a leg out in co rn ers. We disco~ered that they will unfasten on occasion. The front part of the boots are a bit too pointed and narrow for those wi th feet wider than D width street shoes. Those with wider dogs felt their fo refoo t area was a bit cramped. Plast ic boots have a reputa tion of not transmitting much feel of shifter and brake pedals, The Navas are no different. As is true for the genre, however, they do feature lots of impact protection and do a superb job of protecting the foot and lower leg from blows that leather boots wou ld pass on to the rider. Nava boots are avai lable in black with ei ther red or yellow trim . The sugges ted retai l price is 140, the going p rice for a pair of boots today, i t seems.
