Arnaiz takes Gardena Gold Cup HM By Maureen Lee Photos by Dan Mahony GARDENA. CA, APR. 2 The l Oth running of the Gardena Gold Cup opened the '82 flat track season at Ascot Park wi th Rich Arnaiz emerging the winner to get his name engraved on the beautiful perpetual trophy. Arnaiz also posted fastest time and quickest heat. First Expert heat went to Arnaiz, who led it stan to fin- • ish . Steve Oort had second Ior quite a while. then Ted Boody went to the low groove coming out or turn four and took over, leaving Oort with Steve Monger on his tail all the way 10 the end. Terry Poovey grabbed the lead or nd heat but his en ine blew just as he came around and started down the front straight. That left Mike Inderbitzen with a clean shot start to finish with John Burnett behind him as Jim Filice grabbed away the last transfer spot from Rod Sullivan. The third heat had Ted Boody getting the drop on Eklund in turn one and onto the back ch ute it was Boody, Perkins and Eklund. It remained that way until the last lap when Eklund popped into second place on the last turn or the last lap. Mike Minnig arrived turn one first in the semi, but after completing the lap it was Brad Hurst. Minnig, Steve Monger and Danny Perkins. Hurst hung onto the lead and the rest kept their positions until Minnig took over final transfer from Perkins. The Trophy Dash had Arnaiz on the pole. then Eklund, Oort and Perkins, who had unfixable mechanical woes . • Oort had the early grab on the lead but Eklund skidded by and then Arnaiz and Danny Perkins did like wise. leaving Oort with the fourth spot. A quick mention here of the trophies that go into making this a specia night. Don Algie, who had published the Gardena Valley News for 35 years. was honored with the motorsports award from the Chamber or Commerce. The racing trophies were exceptional: the Trophy Dash one Irorn Harley Davidson or Long Beach, who also gave the one ror the Junior Main. The Novice Main Trophy came from The Old Timers Motocross Club a crew or fast oldersters who are developing new chapters all the time, and of course. the magnificent Gold Cup itself for the main, which remains with the Chamber but a fascimile goes with the winning rider each year. Sm =SC'ciii ~ol =:i gooa:Sciff frl tile main but couldn't really hold it in and did a fandango in turn one. Arnaiz was by h im like a shot and that 's all she wrote Ior the first spot. Ri ch never looked back , he just took off lik e a rocket . putting nice space in between himself and Boody, Inderbitzen a nd Monger. About lap four Eklund started his move up through the group, passing Jim Filice, th en on the next lap his engine blew . " I don 't know what, " he said after th e race, " Felt like a piston maybe or the lower end." Inderbitzen had his second place all tucked into hi s pocket until he got off in the south turn , leaving Boody with the second. then Hurst who had just passed Monger, Jim Filice and Rod Sullivan. From then on it was a straight run Ior the checkered nag. In the Junior ranks, Randy Green on a 500cc Honda looked very good winning his heat. but must have had problems because he didn't show up for the main. but he put away such Junior stalwarts as Mark Key and Charles Carroll. ' The second heat was the fastest for the Juniors. Pete Hames got out there and just did 'em in, chased by Tommy Walton and Rob Ely. Third heat was almost another runaway. Steve Karsten got the drop on 'em and was uncatchable. His Harley was hauling but £lying behind were Denny Moore on a 500cc Honda and Barry Pelkey on a 500cc Can -Arn. The Junior semi. that do or die time was a very good go between Bud Carroll and Scott Podergois as they swapped the race lead back and forth between themselves until Scott finally got tired or it all and. upon seeing Bud open the door a bit too wide, shot through and held onto the front spot. The heavy racing was right behind between Dan Moore. Jimmy Rosa and Phil Culver, all the way from Kansas who worked hard 10 get up 10 where he became first alternate. Culver's efforts paid off too. because Green scratched and Culver got into the main. Hames got off and running while behind it 'was Karsten, Podergois and Walton. They changed placesaround quite frequently, although Karsten hung onto his second regardless of what was going on behind. Walton went out when he tumbled in the south turn, and at the nag it was Hames. Karsten , Podergois and Dan Moore. Good news for those of you who saw Culver wallop into the wall . coming out of the north turn. he's ox. Dan Bennett arrived in the first turn first in the Novice main but couldn't hold his position. Doug Chandler took up the number one spot and just held onto it. Bob Land had second for a bit but lost it to Darren Hulbert in a move that shufned several of the top runners around. Bennett and Land were doing some side by side racing at times. lookin' good. But the happiest Novice was of course the winner, Chandler; he never got such a good looking trophy in his life as the one the Old Timers MX Club gave him. • Result s TROPHV DASH: 1. 5.....
