McElroy McWins second Flying W's Spring MX By Wretched Racer WINNEMUCCA. NV, MAR . 14 Reno Expert Al McElroy made his reappearance on the northern Nevada motocross scene, winning the Open Expert class at the second event of the Flying W's Spring MX series . McElroy's red 'n ' gold Maico stayed in front every lap of both ' motos so that there was no doubt about his dominance. The Flying W 's used the Calder , Cycle Park one more time by greatly revising the track layout again. There were some really tricky sections including one uphill double-hump where the higher th e skill level of the rider. the more conservatively he approached it. Beside th e new track design, a steady rain nearly all day added to the complications by adding a few slick spots and making goggles useless. This time, everybody 's ma chine was wa ter-cooled. - The first Open Expert moto, the bunch behind McElroy rehearshed the ir tumbling ac t in th e fir st turn. Don Simonian (Yam) ca me up in second for a lap on ly to be reeled in by Jay Heyin g (Mai) , T he order stayed tha t way until th e chec kered fell. Second big-gun moto, it took three tries (and the referee making Heying start backwards for his overeage rness) to get underway. McElroy repeated hi s wire-to-wire lead. followed by Dan Dossey (Yarn) and Brian Bu tler (Ya m). T he pack pretty much just freig h t-trained around to fini sh their time at bat wi th out m uch drama. So th e overall resu lts fo r the Open Expert s went: McEl roy (I-I), Dossey (3-2) and Heyin g (2-4). Althoug h it must have been thrilling enough for the ri ders, th e O pen Expert sho w was a bit tame for th e spectators. We saw bi g action, tho ug h, in the smaller Expert classes .' Among the q uarter-liter types, Mark Levrett (Yam) was the o nly starter to avoid th e first turn pile-up. H owever, Robbi e Hadl ock (Suz), Ty Erq uiaga (Hon) an d J eff Cloutier (Kaw) q uickly recovered and ran Levret t down. After Levrett conked out to DNF on lap five. his p ursuers finished in th e 'a bove order. In moto two for th e 250s, Erquiaga's holeshot laste d o n ly a quarter of a lap before Hadl ock go t by him. Cloutier's KX began making odd noi ses, a nd th e fro nt brake hose cam e adrift, so he circulated off th e pa ce in third. T o en ter tai n h imself, " Cra zy" Cloutier jumped th e dread doublehump. He wa s th e only racer I saw to even try it during th e co mpetitio n, tho ugh Junior Leonard Hornbarger made it in practice. Hornbarger had flatten ed his rear tire doing that , and Cloutier scared himself eno ugh to decli ne an offer to try it again for the cameras. Meanwhile. a t the headof th e pack. Erquiaga tangled with a lapped rider and creamed h im self to DNF . Levrett DNF again, too , so Hadlock and Cloutier wrapped it up 1-2 for the moto and the overall scores. The 125cc Experts put on a great show. Ty "The Fly" Erquiaga got the holeshot first moto followed by Chuck Beck (off his usual KTM and on a YZ) and Robbie Hadlock. Jeff Cloutier had been pushed off the track in the first turn. Cloutier came back 10 third by the end of the first lap after pressuring Hadlock unti l he bobbled. Then Erquiaga drove off the track letting Cloutier by into the lead until he ran off the track twice and then fell in a ditch, giving the race back to Erquiaga. Second 125cc show. Beck got the holeshot with four other top Experts so close behind. a blanket could have covered them all. They stayed that way for three hot laps until Erquiaga disappeared on the back of the course dropping out of contention. Then Hadlock also disappeared back there. com ing out in last place. He charged back hard, nipping by Cloutier and Shannon Harjes (Yam) 10 challenge Beck for number one. Hadlock applied pure muscle to punch by Beck. Beck tried to return the favor and got knocked down hard for his pains. Cloutier closed in on top of Hadlock to pressure the leader but ultimately had to settle for number two again. Finishing 1-2;3 in their respective classes, these top riders bested the competition nine times running atlast week's Arizona State MX Championships.
