Hooper rules Redding racing By Delbert Longbrake REDDING, CA, MAR. 14 It's not every day a new MX track opens up, so when a race schedule for the Redding motocross made the rounds. it was definitely worth a trip to check it out. And besides, being from Oregon, it would be nice to visit the ' land of Coors beer, sunshine and pretty girls. Just a few mile east of town lies the Redding motocross. A track approximately one and half miles long winds through a long valley. It is obvious that promoters Bob Flemming and Brent Davis are serious about their ' motocross, having installed a 40-rider, individual , backward falling starting gate, arid a small but effective twostory scoring and announcing tower. , All preconceived concepts of California were washed away with the torrential downpour which covered the region Sunday morning. The track was extremely muddy, a n d at least 20 riders decided to spare their bikes and .bodies the agony of northern California mud. Seventy-five riders threw all good sense to th e wind and prepared to race. The Experts, who were all combined into one class, headed for the starting line; however, none had the enthusiasm of Jake the retriever. But wh en the gate fell , ever yo ne went for it a n yway. Ferndale rider T im Phillis put his 250 Honda into first , with I 25cc Expert Mark Rockson a nd 250cc Expert Tim Mulvey close behind. 490 . Maico rider Larry Hooper was in fourth after just about everything went wrong for him at th e start line. Whil e waiting for th e start, Larry's throttle stuck. Hoop's tuner , Dennis Lee , frantically wailed on the stuck m echanism , .b u t in doing so he dropped Larry 's goggles into the mud. The stuck throttle slide dropped at the same time as the starting gate, so Larry was away with no goggles, almost sure disaster in the mud. Riding nearly blind, Larry moved into second on the second lap and into first by lap three when he passed Phill is on a slick uphill section of the track. The order at the finish was Hooper, Phillis and Mulvery. As the second set of motos was getting underway, the sun came out, and it warmed up nicely. Sure enough, a few Coors were popped open, and a couple of pretty girls even walked by! Jake was snoozing in the sunshine, seemingly bored now that it had stopped raining. "Disco Dennis" Lee had Hooper's throttle working "Mega smooth," and Larry was carrying his own goggles before moto two. But none of this seemed to heIp him get to the first turn any faster, for getting out first was Mulvey. For three laps . Hooper chased Mulvey, but on the fourth lap he made his move. In a fast left-right turn combination, Larry set Tim up beautifully; squaring early in the right-hander. The spectators saw the whole move unfold before their eyes, and everyone knew it was going to work. It did, and Larry zapped Mulvey for first, which he held to the flag. In third place and charging hard was Phillis. But despite a most determined look on his face, Tim just couldn 't catch Mulvey, a nd he had to settle for third. "I should have gotten him ," h e s ta ted after th e ' moro. Hooper, meanwhile, was digging the grit out of his eyes, happy that it wa s a ll o ver. The people responsibl e for th e Redding MX definitely know their business. The entire program was run profess ion all y and went off without a hitch. Helping to mak e a good thing better was Hi-Point and ' Sierra Racing Products, both of which donated contingencies to the winners. A good announcer, a good concession stand and a great group of spectators put the frosting o n th e ca ke. But it would be hard to ex pec t less !rom a track which has stereo piped into th e sp o tless restrooms whi ch just happen to be bu ilt oil a semi truck! • Results AdvERTisi~ TItATWORks -..,.- ENGINE DYNAMICS COMPANY 0 D ~• p.::==::;; J' lUlSOOSPEClAUST ·1 H.P.
