River City night MX By Donald Mueller AU ST IN, T X, MAR . 12 T h e beginning of this year's racing at th e River City night motocross marked the return . of numerous nubile nymphso the rwise known as flag girl s. The huge turnout made many .spe cta tors wonder if th ey were a t a day ra ce durin g an unpredicted sol ar ecli p se ca used by th e pl anetary align ment. Th e track wa s watered immediately prior to th e fir st ra ce and stay ed wet most of th e night. The l25 cc Novi ce and Mini Junior classes, most of whom had little. if any, exper ience riding in mud, sloshed a ll over th e tra ck. Some resort ed to tracing th e dry edge of the track, trying to av oid falling into the tren ches. Certain photographers did as much bike dodging as the racers themselves. In th e 250cc Novice cla ss, Mark Mohs got th e hole-ooze on his Suzuki, followed by Paul Horton on his Honda. Mohs went down in a berm and wa s back to fifth, leaving H orton in the lead, followed by Jim Kinared and Steve Blackwell on a Yamaha. Mohs worked his way back up to second, but both he and Kinared went down coming down the hill. Mohs' bike didn 't run well after that, but Kinared was able to work up to a fourth place fin ish. At the checkered it was Horton, Bla ckwell and Darell Decker. . Stev e Blackwell took the holeshot in th e second moto but was immediately passed by Mohs and Lynn Bailey on a Yamaha. Blackwell fell back to fourth when h e was passed by Paul Horton, who proceeded to pressure Bailey, finally taking second on the inside. Blackwell fini shed th e race in sixth, good enough for second overall. Paul Horton took the lead from Mohs, while Bobby Horton played leapfrog with Rocky French's Honda for fifth . French won out and took fourth from Jeff Kaye at the checkered flag, led by Horton, Mohs and Bail ey. In th e Open class two riders went down in th e first turn , but coming out in front were Mike- Beers on a Suzuki , Br ian Zettn er and St eve Cardwell on a Yamaha. Beers fell back to fourth . wh ile Zettner held a n arrow lead over Cardwell. Soon riders were out all over th e track, so me sta lled in the mud as others employed th e over-the -h an d lebars nose-plow maneuver. As the leaders began to ca tch up with the slo west riders, Cardwell took Zettner on the in side. Beers passed Marvin McKim for third, where he finished. Coming in fourth wa s But ch J ennings on a Honda. Cardwell took the ea rly lead in the seco nd heat. Zettner ca me on in the back stra igh t to pass but lost the lead agai n to Cardwell. Zettner worked hard th e rest o f the ra ce to regain the lead but simply didn't have th e power. Jennings ran third the whole ra ce, foll owed by Beers. Da vid Stutts went down at the sta rt of th e Expert c1asss race, perhaps numbed by th e ni ctitation of th e nubile nymph who start ed the race. Hunter Carothers took th e holeshot o n a 250 Yam aha, tailed by Steve Sta ckable, Ri ck Blackwell, John H am a n d J a ck Beckham , both riding H ondas. Beckham jumped past Ham. Caro the rs slipped , co m in g up in third. The orderremained the same throughou t th e race, until the checkered flag , when Beckham moved inside on th e last berm to tak e third. Stutts took th e holeshot in th e secon d moto, followed by Ham and Blackwell. Stutts went over a berm a n d ca me up n ext to last. Stackable led by the end of th e lap, followed by Carothers, H am and Beckham, who repeated his first-mote tactic and jumped past Ham. Carothers went down in a berm a nd ca me up sixth, whil e Blackwell cam e from behind to fill in th e second-place gap. Blackwell 's luck didn't hold, however, as he came off ajump front wheel down and injured h is wrist. Ham went over a berm, giving Lee Dubose third for th e race. Stutts finished with two fifths a n d third overall. • Results 250 NOV: 1. Paul Honan (Han); 2. Steve Black· well (Yam): 3. Lynn Beilay (Yam). OPEN: 1. Stava Cordwell (Yam); 2. Brian Zettner; 3 .
