CeDtral PipeliDe 'Landr um leads at Rio night M X By Lisa Milcich HOUSTON, TX , FEB. 19 Expert action saw Kyle .Landrum leading the pack off the line of the first moto at Rio Bravo's night track with Dan Conway, Kevin Schwartz and Jerry Surber, Jr. , at his heels. Landrum rocketed off the stadium-style jumps with Conway in hot pursuit. Rickey Glaser and Surber were fighting for third as David McClain was getting near enough to make a bid for it also. He slid by Surber on the third lap. Landrum led Conway till the fourth lap when he lost his balance going over a set of whoops giving Conway the advantage he was looking for to take over the lead. Landrum regained his com posure and stayed ahead of third place Glaser. Kawasaki took first and second as Conwa y led Landrum to the checkered flag. Glaser held onto his third, fourth going to McClain. Landrum holes hot the second moto while Conway slipped in behind him , and Charlie Brown came around for th ird. Glaser stuffed out Surber claiming fourth and passed Brown by the third lap. Landrum wasn't giving up a thing for his first place and performed ac cordingly. On the eighth lap when Conwa y was close enough to take away Landrum's first , he flew off the tricky stadium jumps and landed sideways. He tried to save it but slid off the back fender raising the bike up into the air as it smashed against the solid wood fence on the side of the track. The front tire rested on the top of the fence . and the bike stayed upright till Conway pulled it back down. The accident resulted in the loss of his front brake. By the 11th lap , Landrum had a super safe buffer zone between himself and Glaser. Conway was in third till McClain passed him and made the fatal mistake of looking back , lett ing Conway flash by him . I would like to send a special note of speedy recovery to Kathy Holman, a well respec ted rider who had an unfortunate accident: with another rider while racing in the 125cc Intermedi ate class. T he end of the evening report from the ambulance attendant was that she bruised some back mu scles and would be sore for a while. Results 60: 1. Shawn Coo k; 2. Barrett Bush !Yam); 3. Medco-Colorado-WyoadDg-Moataaa-North Dakota -So u th Da Pickard slithers to third straight at Scottsville enduro By Denman Shaffer top honors at the Scottsville Enduro Club's grueling event. Pickard dropped 31 points to edge Suzuki rider Gene Kyson, who dropped 38 points aboard a PE175 . The Texas State Championship En , duro Circuit (TSCEC)-sanctioned run was a severe test of men and machines, as the two-loop , 40-mile course was satu rated from several weeks of constant rain. Winding throughout the piney wood hills of east Texas and crossing many creeks , the course even tually became a mud bath. Only 121 out of 351 starters were able to finish , with many of those completing only the 50-mile short course. Fonner Supercross rider Pickard is sponsored by Lewisville Cycles in Lewisville, TX , and has claimed the last three TSCEC runs in a row. The KTM people are all smiles about the TSCEC circuit, as fellow Texan Joe Dixon won the first four circuit rides to give KTM a clean sweep of the Texas circuit this year. Dixon was a victim of mud at Scottsville and DNF . Oveall A winner Gene Kyson led a contingent of riders from Shreveport, Louisiana's Dusty Wheels M.C. who scored well. Kyson is the defending Southern Enduro Rdiers Association (SERA) Senior A class champion, scoring seven class wins in 1981. He has made a serious dent in the Texas circuit so far in 1982; competing in the tough 200cc A class, Kyson has three top five finishes in three outings, including two overall A wins.
