FEB. 21 00 O"l By Clay Ught Seattle International Raceway was again greeted by a full house of riders on a showery day. The winners read like a 44 who 's who of Seattl e area m otocros sers. Cory Klaudt p u t it to th e 125cc Pros with a 2-1 punch whil e Danny Diesso (Buri en Suz ) used th e same score to clinch 250cc Pro. J ohn Christian, Jr. (Yam su p p port) was th e onl y Pro to go I-I , this wa s in th e Open Pro class. Pro classes were average sized today; both th e 125 and 250cc classes had 10 ap iece. Getting right to th e action, Lance Richotte (Suz) put his Full Floater to the front of th e pa ck fol lowed by Klaudt's sano new '82 KX su p port ride and Todd Paulson (Suz). Richotte and Klaudt had it out up front , both being excellent Pros who finished well a t the Amateur race a t th e Kingdorne, with Klaudt fini sh in g in seecond. Klaudt couldn 't find th e elusive hot line around leader Ri choue whi le Brad Bolmes (Su z) took Paulson to m ove to th ird when Paulson got o u t o f sha pe. A th ree-wa y d ice for fourth was happening between Roland Shaff (Suz), David H enden , J r. (Yam) and Kurt H owland (Suz), At th e flag , the win went to Ri ch otte, second to Klaudt, who let it a ll hang out but co u ldn' t reel Richotte in . Ne xt ca me Bolrnes, Paulson, Shaff. Henden a n d Howland, who worked th rough traffic to finish sevent h. Moto two had Klaudt knock 'em o u t and wa ste little time with a co upl e seco nds lead over Richoue an d Howland, who got off good thi s time. Klaudt took th e moto win that also gav e him th e overa ll foll owed by Richoue, Howland a nd Shaff, who had fourth to himself an d sewed up third overall with a 5-4 finish . The 250cc Pro class h ad some fin e ri ders on h and as wel l. Second was being h eld by J oh n Christian , J r. (Yam su pport). Christian seemed satisfied with second whi le Buffaloe moto red o n in first. Danny Diesso (Bu rien Suz ) moved to secon d. tak ing Christ ian by surp rise, a nd was ou t to get Buffal oe. Time ra n o u t, and Diesso settled for seco nd. Third went to C h ris tia n (who wo n th e Open class a t Kingdome in th e Ama teur cl ass), fourth to former min i rider J ack McGill (Yam) and fifth to David Holloway (Yam). Second m ot o led by Diesso . wa s led by Diesso, Diesso wa s let off th e hook. m ore or less wh en Buffal oe went o u t, a lt h o ugh h e had th e spee d to wi n regardless. T ra ili ng in second was Christian wh o had Holloway and Ward Zeiler (H o n) hot o n hi s trail. Diesso was sailing out front, apparen tly unconcerned of what was going o n beh ind. Ch ristian was still leadin g th e battling tri o an d look ed to be p ickin g up the pace. Th e m oro was over too soon, as far as Chris tia n wa s co n cerned. Diesso took the win an d th e overa ll with hi s 2-1 p lacings. Second went to Christian with a 3-2 an d th ird to Holloway with a 5-3. Chris tia n was looking for a win and found th e going in the Open class easier. Mo to one saw th e big boys batt le down to the wire. Rick T o m (Suz) a nd J im McLea n (Suz) put thei r Float ers beh in d the Yamaha pi lot as Christian wal ked away with the win. Mo to two look ed to be a repeat , onlv McLean ....'3S seco nd this time a nd Trrrthird. The overall went Christian (I-I), McLean (3-2) and Tom (2-3). FEB . 28 What looked to be a perfect day of ra cing turned out to be a nothe r mudder at ERA MX on th e outskirts of Eugen e. which a lways seems 10 ge t th e most ra in in th e Willamett e Vall ey a rea. Mother Nature turned agai ns t rnotocrossers and doused Eugene with over a n inc h o f ra in whi ch mad e for some m essy, yet inte res ting, racin g co ndition s. Steve Will iams (Yam su pport) is o n a ro ll, rac ki ng u p th e 250cc Pro class wi n for th e um pt eenth tim e wi th wire-to-wire wi ns bo th m otos. Wa yn e Ch urch o n a n ew Kawasa ki KX took bo th 125cc Pro mot os by su rprise ove r last o u ti ng'S wi n ner Richar d Earle. The race to wa tch wa s th e 125cc Novice class, which was th e first class o f th e bigger bikes to 9rave th e messy muck . Jim m y Dra gness (Eugene Suz) led at the start over Brian Kra gerud (Yam h ill Yam )and Scott Avery(Suz ). Kragn ess and Kragerud ope ned u p an im me dia te h al f lap lead over th e pack a nd were di cing it o u t up front. Th e o the r 13 riders -were stre w n arou nd the co u rse , eithe r rem oun tin g or spec tating from th e si del ines . Kragerud got by for the lead . bu t o n ly a fte r Kragn ess ba il ed o ff in th e slop and lost a lap, whi ch he had o ver th e enti re pa ck , even lappin g seco n d place. T hi rd went to Randy Lan gh am (Yam), wh o rode back of th e front runn ers, and fourt h to Tren t Wahl (Kaw). Moto two had Kragness aga in lead th e p ack into th e qua gm ire. Kra ge rud got by for th e lead, a nd the race was a ll h is wi th Dennis Ra in wat er (Ho n) finishing second and Kragness third. A race that always bri ngs the spectators o u t of shelter is the Pro class. Only five Pros chose to contest. although 12 were on hand but chose to not compete (w h ich used to be unheard of since Eugene riders are the best in th e mud ). T he skimpy turnout of Pros didn 't mean tha t it wouldn 't be exci ting, and Steve Williams (Ya m) put h is Herb's Cycle into the lead over Rosebu rg 's Rod Huffman (H u ffman Wrigh t Logging/ Suz ) and 125cc riders Rich ard Earle (Cycle Country/ L O P/ Hon ), Wa yne Church (Kaw) a nd Terry Bak er (DG / Eugene Suz) . H u ffm an soon got by Will ia ms as th ey cres ted turn o ne. Will ia ms went sideways a n d was p itc he d off as Earl e co nti n ue d to lea d the 125s over C hurch. Bak er also rook a slop sampl e wh ich let Earle a n d Ch u rch free to go battl e over first 125. Huffman was cooking o u t fro nt, but Williams found a wa y arou nd a n d led by th e hal f. By th is time th e race was rea lly ge ttin g tense ; th e 125cc Intermediat es were a lso in th e hunt, a n d as a lways th ey ru n wi th th e 125cc Pro s. since they are equal in speed. T he In termediates a lso fou nd the hot lin e around the Pros. except for Willia ms a nd C hurch who were on the same lap. Lonny Say les (Yam) a nd Rick Gunderson (Yam ) moved to challenge Earle next a n d p u t o n a two-lap dice with the Pro u nti l Earle ba iled o ff. as did Sayles wh ich left first Intermedia te spot open to G underson. William s took the n ag in first fol lo wed by Ch urch w h il e a lap down the rest of th e pack a t the fini sh look ed lik e this: Ea rle. T he I 25cc Intermediat es were havin g a har der th an usual tim e ca tchi ng th e Pros, since th e mud was ge tt ing deep er as th e rai n came down in bu ckets. Ea rle closed the ga p o n Ch u rch th is moto a nd staye d close. Baker cras he d to put himself among the Intermedia tes w ho were bei ng led by Gunderson and Sayles. Ch urch pulled about six seco nds on Ear le, who was trying h is best to catch Church who was stoked abou t h is ne w KX. Sayles made a la te moto charge that caugh t h im up with the Pro s, but h e didn ' t ge t by as h e an d Earl e went at it with th e Honda rider h oldin g Say les at bay for the rema inder of the moto, Ch urch took the flag first over Earle who staye d close. close enough so that if Church made a mista ke. the moro wo u ld've been his . T racy Meeks (Kaw), tied for third in th e series, jumped to a n ea rly lead in th e I25ccl ntermediate cla ss. Bruce Jackma n an d Robert Feli x both held tigh t h op in g for a way by Meeks . Felix was soon down leaving Mik e Larson (Hon) to hold third. Larson wa s h o t and soon made hi s move on J ackman. La rso n was th e cu rre n t series po int lead er a nd wa s gunning hard for first place poi nts. Meeks ' lead slow ly grew co mforta ble as h e beg an lea vin g th e p ack, nailing th e first moto win . Larson finished second foll owed by J ackman who wa s on ly five p oints behind Larson for (he overa ll. Meeks wasted no tim e in taking cha rge as h e bla sted into a n ea rly seco nd moto lead. Dan Han nah (Suz) and Bill C lontz (fo urt h in th e series) bo th kep t it pegged to h ang with Mee ks. Wi th Larson run ni ng third, he co u ld tie the series and spli t th e honor wi th Meeks. The pressure was hea vy bu t not enough to keep Meek s o u t of th e winner's circle. Meeks took th e ser ies wi n, tyi ng wi th La rso n who finis hed the moto in th ird . Clontz ti ed down a so lid seco nd pl ace moto finish . The 250cc J u niors rocketed off th e line with Frank Val ad ao (H on ). Ri ck Myt he n (S uz) a n d C h ris H olmes (Ho n) h an gin g o nto the fro nt spots. Ron Kn orr, th e series leader , held tight in fourt h . Val adao' s lead grew as h e went a II o ut to add po ints to hi s secon d p lace sta n d ing. Myth en and Holmes went o n 10 fini sh seco nd and thi rd. Knorr picked up fourth. Val ad o used the power of hi s Honda to pu t him into th e lead agai n as Mark Rouff. a lso o n a Honda , hung o nto seco n d. Myt he n a n d Knorr fought ha rd for th ird and fourth. Mythen soon made hi s move on Rou ff with Knorr follow ing to ma ke a double pass. Valadao stre tched h is lead to th e fin ish givi ng h im th e tit le and droppin g Kn orr to seco nd . Pi auoni held it o n to take th e m oto win. 'Sm ith cam e in with seco nd as H ansen dropped to fourth. Tibor Pa pp push ed hard to tak e th ird .
