idd offhe ' .. : us ua ll y better o n the back straight becau se we usu a ll y ha ve a h ead wi nd. The veterans usua lly watch the flags to see which wa y the wi nd is blo wing to kn ow where to mak e a move o n th e last la p . If yo u have the headwi nd on the back straigh t then that's th e ti me to move beca use tha t mea ns a tai lw ind do wn th e fro n t stra ig h t an d th at wo n ' t hel p th e d ra ft a t a ll. No w the start/finis h line is up towa rd turn four and if you mak e yo u r move too lat e yo u won 't h ave enoug h d istance to overta ke. Indianapolis Mile. The tuner wh o burned th e midnight oi l a nd th e ri der wh o co m es to th e track fres h th e next morning is th e winn in g co m bi na tio n needed for th e dayti me Indy. T he track cha nges to a pure horsepower trac k with riders playi ng follow- the-leader throug h the turns. T he g roove is wid e, but the best idea is to get a strong drive co ming 0 [[ th e tu rn and draft past rather than pass diving into the turn s because th a t ca n be a bi t hairy. Ti re wea r is very im porta nt a nd ai r p ress u re is th e key. You want the tire worn at 25 lap s, bu t yo u don ' t wa nt it worn o ut a t20. You a lso don ' t wan t ru bber left after 25 la ps. If yo u wa nt th e ti re to wear a bit faster yo u m ight even cut it a bit. It a ll depends o n h ow hard a nd how black th e g roove is. Hamburg Half Mile The Hamburg H alf Mil e is a new Natio nal on the schedule and I haven 't seen th e track. I beli eve it is probabl y a stock Cd r faci lity with long straigh ts and tight turns. Syracuse Mile. The tr ack at Syracuse becomes a narro w groove, bu t I would say o f a ll th e mil es it seems to be the h orsepo wer track more th an a ny o the r. That 's just a feel in g a lt houg h it see m s th at th e rider with th e most horsepower ca n break th e draft and leave th e rest o f the field to batt le. I've seen riders win th ere by half a stra ig h t whi ch is so me th i ng yo u rarely see a t an y other mil e. The track is so rt of egg shaped and that mak es it different to ride. If th e da y is cloudy a nd th e track ha s been wat ered enoug h yo u can almost get ni ghttime tr ack co nditio ns and th at 's great. San Jose Mile. The fall San Jose Mil e is much more im port ant than th e sp ri n g one. The spring race is wide open while in th e fall everyo ne is a bit ca utio us because th ey wantto come aw ay with as many po ints as possible. This puts a lot of pressure o n th e tuner s. You want to be sure not to let it hang out too mu ch whil e st ill do ing good enough to grab so me points. The track seems a bit h arder , a n d a bit drier , a lt hough yo u ca n set up ba sicall y th e sa me as th e sp ri ng Nat ional. If yo ur machinery is ti red, it' ll show up th ere. Ascot Half Mile. T h is is t he race. Ascot has been th e title decider a lmost every yea r for th e pa st six or seve n seas o ns . The track doesn 't cha nge from the spring to th e fall event , it's still su per sticky. You can use th e sa m e setu p fo r either National. This is th e pressure race. A top fini sh here can mean a good bit of differen ce in th e m oney you 'll draw from th e Winston Pro Series point fund . For so me. it' s probably just a good time si nce it's the last National of th e seas o n. For others. it' s a time to begin thinking about th e next season. .. . •i , 'P -......~---------. ..
