Sout"ern Callfornia-Arizona- / When the finish lin e loom ed in to sight , Atkinson skimmed across and int o the winner's ci rcle with one of the smoothest and most controlled rides of the day. BeItnick managed to hold off Anderson for second place , and Anderson , with a consistent gog ride , cinche d third overall honors. T he 250 cc Pro fans witnessed a classic Honda/Yamaha confronta tion between Honda rookie J im Brodie , with only two weeks of Pro racing u nder his kidney belt , and Yamaha ace Mike Monohan . In their first round of action , these two p ursued ea ch other from wire to wir e. Monohan led off the line , mere inches ahead of Brod ie , but before mote's end he was forced to surrender com m a nd . Meanwhile , back In the pack , wheel-to -wheel duels were going on right and left. O ne of the tightest involved Suzuki -mounted Robin R hodes and Yamaha of Cucamonga 's Scott Cavness. R hod es, in sixth, was doing everything he could to give himself a crack at the top five . The thundering herd approaching Rhodes and Cavness had too much power, and both men found themselves back in the pack. Mike Kell was in th ird and on the gas, pursuing Monohan deep into every berm. Kell had Andy Guth hot on his tail , right down to th e end. When the checkers came out , Guth slipped in to third and forced Kell to settle for fourth with Larry Baker rounding out the top five . When the racers gathered for their second encounter, Kell found himself locked into a handlebar clashing duel for th e lead with Baker. Kell emerged in con trol, followed in close order by Monohan, Baker and Ron Baumgartner . aboard a Kawasaki for Team Green. Guth, who finished third his ' firs t tim e out , was making tracks and was now up in fift~ Monohan's pit man was beside himself as Monohan slipped by Kell to cont rol the pack. Monohan opened up som e breathing sp a ce for himself. Gu th, now in third , was fighting a tight dice over every inch of Saddleback turf. Gu th was on th e gas and closing fast on Kell. Kell , another rook ie with less than a year of Pro ra cing, was doing a good job of holding off the seasoned Pros. When the race drew to a close, Monoha n took home top mone y out of a fiel d of over 20 racers . Gu th nicel y snatched second place loo t, a n d Kell clai med third pla ce honors . .. ......------,.,.....,;"..-....,;"..----- AH1 SAN CTI ONE O PRESENTS 125/250 NATONA CHAMPONS !!lWJl(fPl c· ' ......
