~ TEN YEARS AGO Bruce Brown's classic film On Any Sunday received an Acad emy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Brown was quoted as saying, "Oh boyl Now I can get a tux from my local mortuary and sit with the movie stars." The Soboba Indian Reservation was the site of the annual loo-mi le Soboba, GP , where Malcolm Smith led start to finish on a five-speed 250 Husky. Since the results were uncertain at pressrime, -it was not known whether Bob Messer (Oss) or Jack Morgan (Puc) had finished second in the 500-rider race. San Francisco's Cow P alace featured another in a series of AMA Pro indoor short track races. Yamaha-mounted Kenny Roberts controlled this particular night, winning everything but the Trophy Dash. In the main event his on ly competition came from fellow Yamaha pilot Jim Odom, The Junior GP classes were full of future stars in an ACA road race at Carlsbad Raceway. Wes Co ol ey won in the 250cc ranks while Bruce Hammer topped the 350s. Both rode Yamahas. The Four Aces M.C. put on a tough desert race with their annual Moose Run. There were 922 starters and only 504 (i.ni.shers. But the special note was the fact that the overall winner and the runner-up both rode 175 Puchs. Jeff Wright took his first desert overall win, and Bill Friant was second. Howard Utsey placed third overall on a 400 Suzuki. Riding an immaculate 40-inch Triumph, Tom White dominated Open Expert class racing in a D-37 scrambles at Adelanto. Steve Nichols finished second in front of Jim Sprague. John DeSOlo (Suz) went three for three to win the 500cc Expert class at the weekly night motocross show at Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, CA. Tim Hart (Mai) was top 250cc Expert. Dennis Spence opened up the scrambles season at Fremont Raceway with a 250cc Expert win. Spence also led the 650cc Expert class before mechanical gremlins hit.
