Bethards grabbed the holeshot and never looked back until the checkered, leading the race all the way. Brad Sears and Richard Merritt battled for second with Merritt holding Sears off for three laps. On the fourth lap, Sears put on a drive a n d took over second place with Merritt in hot pursuit right to the finish. Race number three was Motocross, a run-what-you-brung class wi th the winner receiving a Hangtown entry, $200 cash and a Red Dot tire, two Supercross tickets and an assortment of accessories. Doug Taylor wanted it bad. He dropped the hammer on his 125 and held the lead until the fifth lap when Lance Richotte took over the lead. On the final lap, Taylor was right on Richotte's fender and regained the lead only a few feet from the finish to win. The final race of the day saw 51 Seniors line up. Chris Stawart (Kew). Most of the riders stood in awe as they first set their eyes on the track. Without a doubt , it is National caliber course. The super wide mile-and-ahalf track winds up , down and around the hills with an elevation change that has got to be over 500 feet . The first race of the da y was the 125cc Experts. The first couple of laps were relatively slow compared to the way the race finished. Many of the riders were hesitant 10 really go fast at first. No one had ridden the course before, and the re were very few lines through all th at grass . Lap times were around two and half minutes , and all the Experts went 12 laps . The winner of the first mota was Jim Olsen on a Yamaha. Olsen had his problems in the second mota and had to settle for a fifth . The 125cc Novice class was the second race, and many thought it would be one crash after another. How wrong we all were. Brad Wiget blazed both motos for two first place finishes and the overall. Paul Van Horsen challenged Wiget for the lead in the first mota as both riders took turns out front. Van Horsen didn't go quite as fast in the second moto as he finished third. Ron Bradley rocketed off the starting line for the holeshot on the 250cc Novice race. On the fourth lap, Glenn Drummond got by; later, Randy Canale also went by Bradley. All of the 250s handled themselves very well and seemed to get the hang of riding on the hills rather quickly. The 250cc Experts were the fastest bikes on the track, expecially Phil Oveland and his Husky. Oveland had abilities that put him far out in front of his competition from the word go. Doug McRae. on the other hand, had is work cut out for him. McRae spent the first six laps trying to catch Hondamounted Jon Nauman. He finally got by at the top of the hill and hung on to his second-place spot until the finish. The start of the second mota saw the only real crash of the day, a spectacular one at that. Somehow Nauman got bent out of shape about 40 yards before the first tum. Had he been by himself, there probably wouldn't have been any problems; however , Dannie Hawkins was right behind him . Nauman got sideways, and Hawkins hit him square, which sent them both flying through the air. Hawkins' bike suffered damages which prevented him from picking up the pieces and going on . Nauman was pretty shaken up from the spill but seemed to be all right . All in all, it was a very good day of racing, and the response to the new track was overwhelming. It was the kind of course the Experts found challenging, yet one that even the
