The day before he won the 500cc Pro cl888 at the Carlsbad Golden State Series round, he was running around in the desen near Parker, AZ. However, he didn't fare as well there. Driving a CIa88 1 car in the SCORE/Pemod Parker 400, Brad made it as far as the second check and was credited with 23rd out of 44 class entrants. Speaking of Parker, the Class 1 winner was none other than J ack Johnson who is usually seen aboard a Maico. His time of 5 :00:57.47 put him less than six minutes behind Class 22 and overall winner Bob Balentine and less than two minutes in arrears of Larry Roeseler/Chuck Miller . H is th ird overall time was ". . . a nice and easy cruiser run. It was th e kind of rac e I like to run - real fast. " The biggest factor that kept him from getting closer to , or even beating the bikes, was the du st on the Arizona side, since the cars start after all th e bikes . "T he bikes get one lap in Arizona totall y du st-free ," Johnson said. "On the second lap I had so much dust and traffic, there was no way 1 could turn a hot lap." Jim Vester, better known as Suzuki's mechanic for motocrosser Denny Bentley, spent a free weekend at Parker as a codriver, sharing a fourth'place run in Claas 5-1600. Aft er the 1981 season finished . Yamaha dropped their off-road effort, leaving Larry Roeseler with out a ride for '82. However, he showed up at the Parker 400 listing Yamaha Motor Corporation as his primary sponso r. Asked how that came about, Roeseler replied. "O riginally it was supposed to have been dropped . I submitted a budget and sat down and said , 'Shoot, I want to still do this ; I still want to ride Yamahas. ' So I came up with some figures on what it would cost them as far as bikes and parts and expenses. I don't have a mechanic this year; I'm doing it myself. The budget's a little bit smaller, but it doesn't really take as much - it's less involved and I'm sort of in charge of it myself. " His plans for this year? "We're gonna be going to some (AMA One-Da y) Qualifiers - I'm still gonna make the Six Days - and all the SCORE races. It 's going to be a good year; we'll be there." Sources in England showed Papa plcturas of the new Honda European works bikes, The 500cc classer looks similar to last year, alttiough it looks like the gas tank could extend below the seat. Both of the smaller bores are water-cooled. Honda will have a support type program in Europe as well, with riders on modified production bikes . Contesting the 500cc MXGP series will be Gerrit Wolsink (33 years old this year), Henk Seppenwoolde and Toon Karsmakers on CR480s. Supported 250cc riders will be German Rolf Dieffenbach, young Italian Arno Dreschsel, Belgian Jean Claude Laquaye and Dutchman Peter Groeneveld .
