Bill Swinney, 62 , known during the '60s as a tuner ' for TT rider Larry Wilburn and occasional tuner for Gene Romero, passed away in his Lancaster, CA , home on Feb. 4 . A skilled machinist, Swinney often made parts for racers in his garage, many times doing the work for them on the n ight before a race. AMA Grand National Champion Mike Kidd had to convince Honda to allow him to ride the Winston Pro Series this year with his Number One plate. " Honda wanted me to use 72 for the season," said Kidd, " because they didn't want it ' to appear they had bought Number One . I've been riding with 72 since I was 14-years· old and I wasn't about to let anything deprive me of carrying Number One . I told them they didn't have enough money to convince me that 72 was the number I should ride with." " Fro m there we head to Paris for a stadium trials on the 16th and then to another stadium event in Barcelona on the 18th. That should warm us up for the opening round of the World Championship Observed Trials Series near Barcelona on the 21st. We'll be back in the U.S . in time to compete in the opening AMA /NATC title round (in Croom, Florida) on the 27th." Corkey Keener, " M r. Dirt" to his fans and friends, is back on the W inston Pro Series circuit. Keener, who retired from racing near the end of the 1980 season after an accident in which he broke his pelvis, will be a member of Team Yamaha's dirt track effort - on the tuning side of the throttle. Keener has joined Bud Askland, who has been sub-contracted by Yamaha to handle Jimmy Filice's effort - both dirt track and road racing. "Hey, this is work, but it's good to be back doing something I enjoy," said Keener. • Team Honda MXer David Bailey broke a small bone in his left foot while practicing in California on January 27. Bailey never crashed, but planted his foot when he got out of shape. The result was a cast that goes to his knee. His doctor predicted recovery time to be four to six weeks. "The surgery went fantastic, there's no real pain at all," said three- time 250cc MX National Champion Tony DiStefano concerning the major eye surgery he had on December 30. " I have to wear a pair of non -pr escription glasses to protect the eye , as th e stitches will have to stay in for nine months. I loo k pretty distinguished!" It's reported that Winston Pro Series competitor Scott Parker will compete in the April 24-25 Pontiac IM ichiganl Supercross events. Parker reportedly said, "If Steve Wise can race the Houston TT, I can race Pontiac." When asked if he thought he could make the main in the Wrangler Supercross Series round, Parker said, "No problem." S~y tuned.
