only complaint Erl had was the cold
(one repon said it was 31 degrees at
the dawn start time with an icy wind
chilling things further) , "It was cold ,
God was it coldl I wore three jerseys
and a jacket and ski gloves , and I was
still cold," Erl said.
Honda CR480R·mounted Steve Bell
and Denby Dail y stayed about a
minute in back of Shirey/Gaetz the
entire race and finished in 5:42 :35 .82
for third. Bell ran into problems
before starting the Arizona side when
he was unable to change tires .

Dave Miller soloed to his fourth win in
a row in 5:46 :05 .28 . " I made a couple
mistakes out there and paid the price a
little bit," he said while displaying a
bloodied right forearm. "I don't think
I fell down quite as oft~n last year. I
went down in a silt bed on this side
(Arizona) and tore up my glasses and
everything. I had one lens left in th is
side (the left), and I used my goggles to
hold that in place, so things were a
little fuzzy out there. The high speed
stuff, it didn't seem to matter. When
you got into the rocks here, the rocks
looked like there was two of 'em sitting
there . I just had to aim at the center of
'em and hoped I missed 'em. "
Ron Gray and Jim Bringhurst took
thei r Yamaha to the runner-up spot in
5:51:30 .89

by Huskymounted Hoyt Statham and Ron
