N ORTHERN DATEL INE Scott Brown and Kyle Lewis swapped positions for the Mini Intermediate Stock 9· 11 class, giving a few ext ra points to Brown in trying to catch up to series leader Lewis. Shaun Wooten made it all Team Green up front for this class with a 3·3 behind the ot her boys. In the real little guy class. Kyle Lewis and Shaun Kalos traded spots in 60cc Intermediate while Ronnie Densford won both ends of the 6-8. Steve Kotajarvi did likewise in the 9·11 group. In th e Mod ified portions . it was Rich Flem ing continuing at the front of Mini Intermediate 12·16 Division One with a 1· 1 over Chris Stewart (2·2). JAN . 16 It was Old Man Winter who played a special pan in bringing the Continental Mote-sports Club/ Preston Petty Golden State Series Ranch instead of the originaIly scheduled Marysville. In only the second time since the Feather River was dammed above Oroville, the confluence of the Yuba and th e Feather left the 10th Street track under water. CMC prez Stu Peters elected not to outwit Ma Nature and called Tom Anderson about the use of Sand Hill Ranch . Saturday Amateur racing day was the usual long , arduous ope ra tion with cold . foggy wea ther for the over 500 riders who braved th e elements on two distinct race tracks. The minis had the area usually reserved for cross country and marathons with lots of elevation changes while the maxis rode on the usu al motocross track on the side of the ma in hill , all very challenging. Mike Larson came off the big series winne r still leading the 125cc Intermediates with two moto wins , while the only other series leader. Ron Knarr, held that point despite losing the round to Rich Mythen in the 250cc Junior divisions. , It was no contest for the top rated girl racer Dorene Payne on a new sup port Honda CR250R out of Fremont Cycle Center. Dorene got both holeshots and left the other girls to fight it out, taking big wins for Hi-Point Racing and ND Spark Plugs. Dorene was so far gone that the best race of the girls was between Jan Murray and Jeanie Morgan who battled throughout to Sand Hill both mo tos after Debbie Jamerson crashed. Morgan took th e first -round second spot over Murray, bu t they swapped those places in round two to tally second and third to Payne. Glen Reed appeared to ha ve all in grasp in the first division of 250cc Intermediate with an easy first round win but had some trouble ' in the second round, losing the lead spot and a side cover to his Suzuki ignition but holding on to the overall win with a I · 4 combo. Bill Glore added to his series total to close the gap on early leader Rich Boiteau, Glore put together a 5-1 effort for second over Beaver Ellis and Ron Pinheiro . Mike Larson. little brother to Ph il. had it all his own way in the first d ivision of 125cc Intermediates. leading all the way on his new Honda and con tinuing to dominate his part of the series. T racy Meeks was tied after th e Madera round but had a horrendous time in the first moto. A combined 222 for 10th overall didn 't help the tot al much . Bill Clon tz took advantage by taki ng second with a 2-3 over Tony Sira cusa . In th e second division it was Bru ce Jackman th e winner with a 1·2 and more series points over Mike Fisher (3· 3) and Bret Redman (4-4), who listed home as South Africa . Injuries plagued this class with Cory Perreault breaking his leg in the first moto while Bret Cahors crashed his L IC Racer twice, injuri ng a wrist. Kyle Fleming won the Mini Interrnediate Modified 12·16 Division Two with a 2·1 count over Mouse McCoy's 1·2 in a hotly contested battle. The other guy in the five-kid battle for the series title was Gary Rickk i who finish ed fifth in the first division. Scott Stone beat out Tim McClintock. Tonight 's racing was h ot enough to thaw the ice and snow at the Josep h ine County Fai rgrounds as th e temperature rose to a ba lm y 23 degrees. which seems like a tropical hea t wave here in th e great whi te north. A tu rnout o f aro u n d 100 ri ders were on hand. a mixed group of short trackers an d m otocrosser s (who are findi ng indoor racing mo re sui ta ble d ue to m iserable o u tdoor condi tions which hav e resulted in a near sta ndstill of MX events in Oregon). The heats were run o ff in their us ua l fas hions - qu ickly - as well as th e sem is. Top three from th e h ea ts a nd th e winner of th e sem i m ade a n exi t directl y to th e main, and in the 80cc Expert m ain, Andy Dixson took the lead i nto the left-hander (bei ng a n MX er I still ha ven 't go tte n u sed to th inking left) wi th its usu al pi leu ps. Afte r the turmoil , Di xson was moving out over Wayne Frampton a nd the rest o f the pack who were scurrying like flies o n meat. Dixson ra the r handi ly too k th e win. The 100cc A main was next; Robbie Bla gg took command over Bria n Sheets a nd Fra m p ton who was looking to improve h is last outing. T he three headed the small -bo re machi n ery a nd were havi ng a terri fic dice for first . Blagg soon opened up a sizea ble lea d over Sheets a nd Frampton w ho we re cla n ging bars looking for space to close the gap on Blagg . who went o n to th e win. T he 125cc A ma i n was a nother ba ttle . in a series of ha nd lebar rattlers bet wee n R o bert H orban a nd Dave Nordi n, wh o seems to be ge tt ing better with time. Nordin held H orb an a t ba y for most of the main until H orba n sli p ped by w he n Nord in gra bbe d too much thrott le, b ut li ke a bad chec k, Nordin came bo unci ng back to rake the chec kers over Horban, J oe Klu m and Stacy Tesch. H orba n roa red back to ta ke the 200cc A mai n, through, blitzing a hea d of Ch ris Sa ndq uist and J oe l Dixson. The spectators wer e biting at their nails. nervously anticipating the start of the 250cc A m ain. which provided th e specta tors the next best rac e of the evening. O n the line were the Word brothers, Frank (Yam Sports Center) a nd R ich (R&B Raci ng Suz), wh o we re out to put the stops on Jeff Camp bell ( Ya m ), who is agai n Na tio nal #70 in 1982. Cam p bell led off th e field, but Fra n k Word , who is this yea r's National #85. wa nted another wi n to ad d to his stunni ng victory strea k. Frank Word was holding o ff Campbell . The final of the even ing was th e Pro Mon ey ma i n . A hungry pack of Experts were on the line for the bucks, a nd it became dog-eat-dog. Fra n k Word un leased his Ya ma ha int o the lead a nd appea red to be a n easy wi n ner (zzz), bu t wait (everyon e wake up), this race isn 't over. Jeff Cam pbell turned on th e wi ck and was closing the gap. J eff H arsha a n d Brett H ow ard third and fourt h. Word chal ked u p a not he r one. though.
