CAlIllI01-0411 12131427-7433 Visa I MC I • I • I We had anticipated sunnny, warm weather, but instead got the liquid version as Mother Nature wasn't nice to us once again in the Northwest. The nasty weather didn't stop Yamaha support rider Steve Williams from taking sloppy 250cc Pro wins, nor stop Salem's Richard Earle (Cycle Country Hon) from sweeping the 125cc Pro class . Each outing just keeps getting worse and worse, weather wise, even though it doesn't stop the die hards in southern Oregon. It keeps us wondering what to expect next; we've had snow, ice, floods and volcanic fallout! The largest race of the day was the 125cc Novice class. At the start of the race , 15 riders entered turn one , but only nine exited as one of the lakes took its toll. Rick Ballentine (Yam) took early command of the mud madness. Scoring looked to be a joke; number plates were covered, and how they scored them is beyond me. Mike Tobin (Suz) was in second, a spot which would be his to the end ahead of Doug Sheely (Yam), and that's the way it ended. One rider I was sure of was Grady Troglin (C-A) on the only orange machine in the pack; it stuck out like a sore thumbl Troglin took fourth . Second outing had Alan Fisher (Suz) and Larry Bromwell (Yam) lead the troops into the slew and pull away . By the halfway mark , only two riders were recognizable Ballentine, who moved to second, and Fisher, who was all clean and out front all alone. Troglin put his Can-Am into third to the finish while Fisher took the checkers in first and Ballentine second. Overall brass went Ballentine (1-2) , Fisher (5-1) and Troglin (4-3) for third . The rest of the riders were unbelievably inconsistent, like a 13-5 or 3-12; what a bummerl One race that the spectators did come out of cover for was the 125/250cc Pro race . Steve Williams (Herbs Cycle/Yam support) pulled a "clea n" holeshot roosting the pack. Richard Earle (Cycle Country/Hon), Wayne Church (Valley Cycles Yam) and Clay Light (LOP/Yamhill Yamaha) followed closely through the water-filled whoops. The pack of 12 was soon spreading out in the muck, and Earle got by Williams and briefly led a lap while Church went for a sloppy soil sample letting Light by (who hasn't touched a bike for over seven months!). Earle yielded to Williams by lap two and was riding at his best. Two weeks ago he got smoked by the Intermediates but this time was out for revenge, even though, luckily, they were not combined today (for some odd reason, the Intermediates go faster than the Pros herel), Williams hit lapped traffic early in the race and ~as really pulling away . The Novice and Intermediate 250s were also in the hunt. Linsay Wum (Yam) and Mike Obie (Yam) were leading that portion of the race over Wesley Sams (LOP Yam). Williams held on for the win, but it was Earle who took the 125cc moto win over Church and Light. Lazar Kalugin (Kaw of Woodburn) won the Novice race over John Misa (Suz). Waiting on the line for moto two. if you'l1 allow my own thoughts to interject, Jan Newman's statement in a recent story came to mind: "Why anyone would want to race in these conditions is beyond me.
