Cates had the lead briefly, but slid out in a corner below the Webco tower. Holland kept battling Beier and took over the lead but fell shortly. after do ing th is. Beier was now in first but being pursued by Chris Heisser. Soon Heisser made his move and took over th e lead. As soon as Heisser made the pass his Suzuki had th ro ttle problems that pu t him out. Cates made a stunning comeback and worked by Beier for first while Beier held off George Holland. They finish ed in that order. Ga ry Denton was in the line-up but he had a bad start and th en crashed on t he back part of the track. Denton worked his way up to a fine fourth pla ce . No d oubt a bou t Jt, this was a com pl ica ted race. The red hot action simmered down " a bi t in the final mota . It was more of a match ra ce between Cates and Denton the two Suzuki rid ers . Cates got th e holeshot and Denton was right after him. Denton's hopes were cut short when his bike d eveloped a flat tir e. Beier cont rolled second place over Holland who claim ed th ird place after working by Rick Rya n. Two firsts gav e Cates the best sh are of the money over Beier and Holland . Ga ry Denton had his share of bad luck in the 125cc Pro race. In the 250cc Pro contest he ended up the big money winner. Gary was winning the first mota till Honda mounted J im Tarantino passed him half-way through the race. Denton let Jim go by and settled into second while T eam Green's Curt McCu istion placed third . Denton had the lead wired in the final moto and ea rned the win . Tarantino was second in th e m ota a nd the money list. Scott Johnson took his Ma ico to th ird in th e final moto ahead of McCuistion but on th e money list it was th e other way around . J eff J ennings. now on a Yamaha , was fifth . Andy Guth was out of action for over a yea r with a knee inju ry was back in the line-u p, Mini Expert Eddie Gauley took a big leap and rac ed on a new 250 . Gauley didn't pla ce well but showed that he has guts . A good battle was seen in th e 250cc . Intermediate cla ss. J im Brodie won t he first moto over Marc Johnson and Perry Scott. J Steve Newton was fourth in the opening moto but made a strong comeback and won the fina l race . A battle took place over second be tween Honda riders Brodie and Scott. Brodie came out of it in second. A 1-2 tally gave Brodie th e top trophy over Newton and Scott. Th e Carls bad sky gets perforat ed by Patt Hubbs' waterpumping Suzuki. Results 60 NOV: 1. Hubbs, Carlson win at Carlsbad MX By Myron Hemley CARLSBAD, CA , DEC . 27 Pat Hubbs hotdogged to a win in the 125cc Pro class a nd Woody Carlson just sta yed on his wheels to take the 250s at the Continental Mota-sports Club Carlsbad MX . Robbie Nolin took th e lead in the first moto of the 125s over Ra y T etherton . Pat Hubbs . Mark Denning, Scott Sa rgent and T erry Murry . On the second lap Hubbs passed Tetherton to move into second and . th en passed Nolin for th e le~d at th e sta rt ofia p three. Denning moved into third and Sargent took over fourt h when they passed Tetherton on laps three an d five. Hu b bs held his lead for t he win over Noli n , Den ning , Sa rge nt, T etherton a nd Mu rry. Nolin j umped ou t to a qu ick lead in the second m oto a head of Hubbs. Sargent , Tetherton , Murray and Denning. Mu rray a nd 'Den nin g moved int o fourt h an d fifth when th ey passed T etherton on the second la p . Denni ng increased his pa ce as he passed Mu rray for fou rt h a nd Sa rgent for t hird. As he tri ed to close th e 12 second lead of Nolin and Hubbs, Nol in held a two second lead. The sevent h lap Nolin sta rte d swa p ping on the uphi ll a nd kissed dirt. . Hu bb s moved into the lead for th e win over Den ning, Sa rgent . Murray, Tether ton and No lin ca me bac k 10 finish the last la p. In th e 250s Jim Odle was king of the first mot o. He rode un challenged from wire 10 wire for the win. Tom Brown went all the way to ta ke second and Wood y Carlson took th ird aft er passing David H am m ond on the second la p . Ch uck Brenk us m oved up the m ost position s. . He passed Dou g - Bower s and H am mond fell to give him fou rt h . Bowers finished in fifth, ' J eff Lu cas sixth and Hammon d in sevent h. In the second moto Odie took th e holeshor over Hammon d and Brown . Brown th rilled the cro wd when he passed Hammond a nd Odie on t he d ownhill on the first lap . Odie came back on the next lap to regai n the lead . Ca rlson passed Hammond to ta ke over third on the second lap and Brenkus and Bowers were running fifth and sixt h . Odie was sta rt ing to run away from the rest of the pa ck when he fell hard comi ng off th e ledge on th e eighth lap which put him out of th e race . Brown moved into th e lead bu t had 10 fight for it as he d iced with Carlson in second . Ca rlson couldn't take th e lead until th e last lap whe n Brown fell going th rough th e s-tu rns at the bott om 0 t he uphill. Ca rlson took th e win over Bro wn . Hammond and Brenkus. DEC . 27 Larry Roeseler , probably the highest paid off-road racer around, fittingly won th e premier event of the Professional Racing O rganization . The event was billed as th e Crystal Challenge an d held at Riverside Rac ewa y. PROs Challenge was well a tte nd ed by the Pros as well as th e Junior Pro s an d Novices. · The first event was a one a nd on e ha lf hour rac e for the Novices. T he ne w organiza tion had a somewhat new starting procedure. Riders started with th eir left hand on the throttle and righ t hand on helmet. It seemed od d bu t all went well. First lap leader was Dean .Stockwell (C-A) who ap pea red to be a little under -cla ssified . Second was Shawn Devlin who was follow ed by Jo hn Kinney. Holding down fourth overall a nd first 250cc was Rick Burnside. Steve Hostetler was second 250cc in the 33
