Showers soaks up
Sawmill Enduro
•
win
By J im Bowman
LOWER LAKE. CA . DEC . 6
Frank Showers soaked up the
overall, 250cc class win, and
more than likely, a great deal of
water at the rain -drenched Distr ict 36 Sawmill Enduro today. The
event began in .a drizzle that later
turned into a dow npour and prevented
157 of the 243 rid ers from finishing the
event .
Showers' scor e of two was no t earned
without competition . Craig Fator,
Da n Neilson and Jeff H enning pla ced
on e, two and three in the Open A
cla ss. all with th e tie -score of three
(actual places determined by seconds).
Taz Harvey's score of 4.160 was also
qui te close , a nd perhaps more
awesome . Harvey piloted his lesser
powered 200cc m issle to within two
points of the overall, seven po ints
ahead of second pla ce in 200cc A a nd
18 points ahead ofthird.
Although the d eteriorating trail
conditions troubled some A riders,
tho se riders suffered much less than
the later starting Band C riders. Kirk
R atzel lost 98 points more than his
class winner. Pet er Prichard (200 cc .
B). but still placed second in class . A
sim iliar point spread also occured
between second and third place in the
250cc B class.
T he Novice (C) class was the last
class to start, an d as a result , those
riders fou nd lit tle traction or com fort
a head . O nly five C riders were
fortunate enough to finish within the
allo tted one hour time , and because of
this, most C rider trophies were
awarded based on how far the rider
rod e before being disqualified (one
hou r late) or quitting.
The troubles th e North Ba y Motorcycle Club had in putting on this
enduro have ruled out the possibility
of a 1982 Sawmill . In 1981 , the club
suffered three pos tponements - one
bec ause of late paperwork, one
bec ause of en vironmentalist intervention , and th e last , because of ra in.
It was only by luck sim ilia r to the p ro verbial flip-of-the-coin that the Saw mill was allowed to start on this m isty
morning .
Some club members are hoping for
a 1983 Sawmill Enduro , while others,
bitter from fru stration and criticism .
prefer to wait for 1984. Only one thing
is certain; Beca use the club is still
cleaning up after th e 1981 enduro.
and 1982 is her e. there will be no time
to break trail an d plan a Sawmill
Enduro for 1982.
